I remember a short story by a fairly modern sci-fi/fantasy author where the setting was a ballroom-type event in a space colony. There was a mystery guest whose only apparal was an opaque energy field, out of which extended her hands, feet and head. Oh, and a pair of earings. Caused quite the sensation, but she had to make herself scarce before she ran out of power!

For some reason, I remember the author as Anne McAffrey. (Which goes to show that authors can overuse famous story worlds...)
