Putin stroked his ego, publicly and privately.

And Trump is too vain and obsessed with his own desires to notice that Putin was quite obviously laughing at him later.

Putin fed his ego, so he gave Putin praise, a few bargaining chips, and other things in return.

If Trump understood gratitude, he might feel that over the 2016 election, but I doubt Trump understands that or loyalty, except when he expects it from others.
