Paranoia is not the same as addiction, but is good to help detect addition early.
If you can go months without drinking, and if you can drink one or two drinks without having to keep tossing them back, it's a good sign.
It's when you have no control that it's a problem. No control includes things such as never being able to have one, or maybe not being able to decline a drink in social setting.
If it doesn't occur to balance # drinks with how long it will take to sober up, and how long you can stay somewhere, that's bad.
Not being willing to give up your keys when you're drunk, or deciding "I drive better after a few drinks anyway" are BAD signs.
Most of all, if you are absolutely sure it's not your fault, or not your responsibility, then you have a serious problem.
It's rough.
I work with SnArL and we have to mock him on a regular basis, but he's doing well. He's still coming to terms with responsibility in some regards (emotions and logic aren't as well acquainted yet) but he's getting things back in order and adapting to his new life. Overall he's a good guy, and is willing to take the steps required to keep himself out of harm's way. |
