"kids being kids" petty theft in that scenario would have gone for a candybar in the checkout line, NOT the wallet if another customer. Nobody goes from "sweet innocent child" to pickpocketer over night. If he did it to you, he's done it before. A lot. No way mommy doesn't know about junior's "hobby". Assuming the previous is true, that "phone call" and reaction are pure acting. A cover/distraction to get them out of the store before the cops show up. Just my opinion.
