...I looked around to find "something, out there" that did what I wanted to no avail. "Fine," I thought, "I'll just make my own!" And so it began.
The design, as I'm executing it, looks very much like a Flintstone car suspension, with four (direct-driven) wheels (one on each "corner") and a height-adjustable brace that holds (another direct-driven) reel mower. Two 12V gel-cell batteries "live" between the front and rear drive wheels (one on each side) and the controller board (mounted vertically) "lives" on the left, mounted above the left-rear drivewheel. The radio transceiver (and link controller) "live" in a similar setup over the right-rear drivewheel. The entire design is centerline balanced (front-to-rear as well as right-to-left) and totally out of the way of flying cut grass.
I figure I'm about $300 from completing the first "body" (I refer to the controller as the "mind", the home-base controller as the "mother-brain") and will run it through some fairly challenging performance tests before I start mass-producing them for the rest of the squad.
The whole shootin' match is just about low enough to crawl underneath a standard automobile, except for the reel and the batteries. Well, there's really no need, (I don't foresee having to mow under a vehicle at any time) so I probably won't reconfigure it for that possibility. The upshot of this particular configuration is that the machine can run along some really steep hills without fear of flipping, which is one of my concerns.
Thanks for your kind words of support - it makes me feel as though I may (one day) become proficient. Especially if I just keep trying, keep learning, keep doing. "Experience varies with equipment ruined." But your mileage may vary... |
