Taking note of the warning symbol that popped up, in that moment of clarity you check the rangefinder readout in your smartgun link on your retina, comparing it with what you can actually see. It reads 822.6 metres, but it looks like it might actually be a kilometre or more. The truth might actually lie somewhere in the middle.
The large armored group *IS* Reggie's group - somehow the descriptive narrative made you think they might be different. But no, it's just another moniker for the troublesome trio, Reggie and his Boys. Your mind wanders over the number of Mages that might be required to conduct a ritual this vast - you stop and think about people you know in the biz, and recall that sometimes it isn't the sheer number but the talent. You remember hearing that somewhere, but you can't quite put your finger on the source. Yet there just could be a large number of them out there, and you reason that the locus of this ritual is that fire, out there in the oddly-distorted distance. So any number between 4 and Infinity. Make that Infinity Minus One, you know, to include the rational average of nature.
"One to all.” you transmit on the all-push channel, “We have a large scale magic ritual taking place in central park. Sources indicate it's AOE is 500m from Ritual Epicentre. Not sure what kind of Rite they're performing. Distances seem to be expanded, and light seems to be dimmed. I have a bead on the target, but unsure how trustworthy eyes are at the moment. Please Advise." The channel then crackles back into silence.
Thermographically you can see the shades that make out the trio far ahead, but you *think* you can see what looks to be 8+ individuals standing in a circle, the fire dancing and capering at their epicentre. You can also see what looks like a thin red line, maybe two really close to each other, encircling that group of mages at the 200-yard mark, but it's not actually visible under the current light, and it's not really that much warmer than the surrounding areas, making it difficult - but not impossible - to see at this distance.
You continue to progress forward in full stealth mode... |
