and what you are after is the input voltage and the amperage is a bit low to just grab one and go with this gadget off the shelf.

What we need to do is black-box or reverse-engineer how they do it for this Recreational Vehicle regulator and get you a circuit similar to it (a bit higher amperage and a bit lower input voltage).

Sounds to me like it might be a 36V zener voltage reference controlling a series of pass transistors (high power) to spread the load and keep everything from smoking.

Six 2N3055s perhaps? One chasing the other, in a cascade? Should be cheap enough, six of them gets you to 900 watts.

Any higher power pass transistors you can find would let you use fewer pass transistors, but this way would work. I didn't dive for bigger parts, and don't have any on hand myself. But I've used 3055's before and they hold at least 150 watts each. More if you heat-sink them and put a fan on it.
