| Searching a given site for answers - using Google |

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a way (to Google/Search the comments/board?)
I just like to know where that's located - because I haven't been able to remember it (addle-minded, quite possibly due to age) fully. So here I am, placing a reminder (and a bookmark) to keep it "at my fingertips", because it is SO useful!
At a Google prompt, type the stuff you're searching for, and add the following text:
site:<the site you want to search, no space between the colon and the sitename>
So if I were looking for something on User Friendly, I'd say "site:userfriendly.org" in my search prompt. Since we all know I'd be looking for something specific, I can add that "something specific" using the "+" operator. For instance, if I was searching User Friendly for something stupid I might have said in 2008, I would probably say something like:
site:userfriendly.org + "by LongFist" + "2008-"
...and if I was sure it wasn't a Diary entry, I'd probably add something more to it to look like:
site:userfriendly.org +"by LongFist" +"2008-" -"Diary of"
All of this is pretty much verbatim from the linked conversation - but it all explains how this magic works, and how I might apply it to various web sites that like to hide information deep in chaotic forum structures. If it's an indexed page, (with this tool) I can usually get a grip on it - or get close enough as makes no odds. |
