would you even need the front of the machine publicly accessible? They have not legit reason to use any form of removeable media... or access the power button.

For OS, I'd say one of the BSD's - maybe even Trusted? Haven't played with it myself, but if you want to keep the machine locked up and secure, it appears to be good.

Then again, WinXP is very good at locking one out of everything useful... (much to my chagrin when I'm in an XP lab).
