I just got off the phone with a Representative of my bank.
It seems that they were concerned about some "very unlike me" charges that suddenly appeared upon my account, & were calling to confirm that *I* had actually made them...
Turns out that, no, I didn't.
Now, for Thanksgiving, instead of going to nice dinner parties with the folks & relatives like nearly every OTHER normal human being, I get to spend the day at the local Police office, filling out paperwork declaring the theft of my ATM card (even though it's still in my physical possession) and explaining to the Police that:
* NO I didn't make any charges in San Francisco (I haven't been there in *years*)
* NO I definitely didn't make any ATM withdrawls from a CitiBank ATM (I don't know if there IS a CitiBank branch in my town, so I highly doubt I've *EVER* used a CitiBank ATM to pull my money from),
* Since my usual profile of charges to my account are under $20 (mostly under $10) and all made within a three block radius from my work, the liklihood that I would EVER make a THREE HUNDRED DOLLAR and two, ONE HUNDRED Dollar withdrawls in the same day in a city I haven't been to in years at a bank I've probably NEVER been to, is slim to ZERO...
Now my bank balance is effectively zero ($2 and some change), there are $500 worth of cheques still outstanding that, if the bank bounces as NSF because of this, you may very well hear of me on the late-breaking Action News as having leveled a certain bank branch into a smoldering crater of molten metal & ash...
*And stood there laughing*
I can't figure out where / whom might have taken it... I effectively use it only at the same five stores (Togo's sandwhiches, Taco Bell, a chinese food place, a teryaki rice bowl place, & the gas station on the corner) & have been going to them for years, so I have no reason to NOT trust the people there. (Most of them know me on sight & vice versa.) The only "out of the ordinary" places I've been to, I've been very carefull in guarding my PIN from the casual observer... Like hiding the screen nearly to my chest, blocking the view with one hand, and covering the touch screen with the other as I press in the PIN with my thumb - it takes practice, but once you get used to doing it, trying to "peek" at my code is like trying to copy off the test of the person next to you when they've got their arm, shoulder, & torso between you and their sheet... heheh

Well, I guess I start paying cash or cheque for everything again... I'll hit the bank's in-wall ATM once every few days to get cash out, & leave my ATM card in the wallet... If I need to buy something, I'll either go pull the money out first from the bank's in-wall ATM (& wave at the security camera so they know it's me) or write the store a cheque...
I *hate* writing cheques - it always fouls up my balance until the vendor decides to be bothered depositing it & drawing against it... Damn it, if *I* have to keep my books balanced, how the [CENSORED] am I supposed to do so when the verification of a transaction (and the subsequent removal of the money FROM it) doesn't happen for a month or more beyond the date/time of when it was done??? I've got three outstanding cheques, all drafted late last month, which haven't cleared yet - yet I've deducted the funds they represent from my register, *I* show the money as gone from my account, and consider the matter closed. Unfortunately, because the BANK hasn't gotten said cheques yet, THEY say the money is still there (it's not, I'm out $500+ dollars from the theives) and may try to honor the drafts when they arrive. If they DO, and don't take into account this lovely matter, they may bounce them as insufficient funds! Despite the fact that, when they were drafted, the money was there, my Register says the money was there, but because the vendor can't pull their heads out of their arse, may not ACTUALLY get removed from my account until NEXT month sometime!
(Insert Primal Scream here)

(Banging my head against the desk a few zillion times in anger, frustration, & ever-deepening Depression...)
