I would boot the computer to a Knoppix CD with the drive connected, if it still would not see it, I would return it under warranty. If no warranty, crack that baby open and install the drive in a computer, then boot it to Knoppix and see if THAT works.
If so, the drive is OK, but the external chassis is busted.
If not, Knoppix has some drive repair utils - you'll have to research them because I'm not all that familiar with them.
Does the MSS have an external power brick? Could be that has failed, and not the chassis or drive - maybe the connector, even.
