The Spoiler rule. by shargo 2009-11-06 05:16:07
This is a draft for next version of FAQ but the generic rule is active!

What is considered spoilers
Story/punchline/main joke are always spoilers.
Examples of what is considered spoilers:
* What happens in a movie/program/book
* Punchlines of daily comics/joking sites

Not spoilers:
That you thought X was very funny today and now need a new keyboard, the comic from 04-07-30, what happens in very well known story's (pst! there's a creature called hobbit in the novel "The lord of the rings"!)
"Small" details, like "I loved NN's shirt" if that isn't a major part.

This ends up in that something that was released recently is more sensitive to the requirement of warning then old stuff.

The main rule is "Would I have liked to have this knowledge before reading/seeing?" If yes then it's probably ok, if not or in doubt a warning is in place.

No spoilers in the subject line.
If your post contains spoilers that should be clearly written, preferably by having "SPOILERS: target" in the subject (this is a must in replies that contains spoilers).
A thread is considered labelled for all replies to a post labelled spoiler.

How to write them anyway
Spoiler space:
At least 300 characters before the spoilers.
Only usable in a TLP
It's the characters that counts, not number of lines!
The rule for White space is applied here as well

ROT13
Are a common and simple text transformation there are also others.

Note that if you have "Expand all" selected then you might see spoilers in replies (Spoilerspace doesn't work in replies so it's nothing to do but either accept or change setting).
