It looks like, once again, the people who actually do the work are getting screwed while the companies that finagle the patents and copyrights out of them are raking in the dough. It's not right. The only way to change things is to shine the spotlight on them to see which ones scurry off like the cockroaches they are. The reason things don't get changed for greater parity is that the government knows that most of the people don't give a crap about anything that's not in their own narrow little worlds. They don't have the scope to see that things outside their purview really do impact them because they've never watched "Connections" or realized that the underlying reason for the Mickey Mouse watch to cost so much is that the company has a copyright long past its initial interest. Politicians are fickle creatures. They only hear what's shouted at them by numbers of people. If you feel strongly about this issue, you could organize people to email their representatives urging them to do something about it.
