You're acting as if it's entirely your fault - even though you (obviously) don't feel that's the case. I agree with you; I don't think this joke was particularly funny, but I should have seen that it was a joke - I would have just said, "I don't think that's very funny" and that would have been the end of it as far as I was concerned. The same, I think, should go for everyone else involved. Keep up as you're going, more or less, but also keep in mind that some people can't see a joke very easily. The smiley face does a good bit to help.
