So where is the story about your beard job loss? by CALL-1982020-05-07 08:56:33
    Oh, that's been a while. by rebill 2020-05-13 11:45:03
Neither Google nor Bing are showing it in their search results.

So, time to re-tell the tale.

During one of my periods of unemployment, I was interviewed by a company for a software development job in my home city. I had friends that worked at the company (which got me the interview).

The engineering manager seemed to like me, and I thought I did well in the interview with him, and subsequent interviews with the VP and President of the company. I was told that they would make a decision in a few days.

I waited a few days, and called to find out the status. That is when things went weird. The administrative assistant for the VP told me that the VP was busy and would call me back ... which did not happen.

I called back (I think it was the next day, but 27 years have gone by, so that part is a little fuzzy), and asked to speak with the VP, and I was put on hold. For a very long time. I was then told that the VP was not going to take my call, and was unceremoniously hung up upon.

A simple, "we are not going to extend an employment offer to you" would have been far more professional. I told the friends that were working there exactly how I felt, and that I thought that they needed to get out of there. The told me that the engineering manager had tried to hire me, but that something about me put off both the VP and the Owner.

A few months later, one of those friends of mine stopped me and told me something that explained the whole mess. He had been at work, and made a comment along the lines of "I am thinking about growing a beard." He was IMMEDIATELY told "Do not do that ... the VP thinks that people with beards have something to hide" by the engineering manager.

That clicked.

I had had a full beard for many years at that point in my life. I started growing a moustache in high school as a result of some kid punching me in the face hard enough to pierce my upper lip with my own tooth ... I could not shave while the stitches were in place. When the stitches came out, there was a scar I did not like to be reminded of, so the moustache remained.

I grew the beard, and decided that I liked the look. It hid my double chin.

So, although it is true that I did have something I wanted to hide - two things! - the same thing applies to any woman that uses hair dye ("oh, Mrs. VP of that company I interviewed for, your hypocrisy is calling!").

It wasn't that long after that my friends were no longer at that company. I don't remember if they folded entirely or not ... it wasn't my problem.
