lntellectual discussions about Americans inGermany by Garrinka2005-12-21 04:57:55
What "Americans"? Are there any left? by aix tom 2005-12-21 06:41:54
I grew up in a town with an American base (Crailsheim), so there were a lot of Americans around, including our next-door neighbour.

Were I live now (Heilbronn) there also used to be base with Pershing missles, but that one is gone now, too.

To Answer you Questions :

1. That has of course changed from the "They protect us from the Russians" Angle of the 70s and early 80th. Now one could ask "What do they still do here", but any base that remains is a source of Jobs, so that's a plus. (I even applied at the base in Würzburg for a job as technical specialist about 6-7 years ago, but that didn't work out because the deparment go closed.)

2. Step one to improve relations is to have relations. ;-)
I know there were/are a lot of soldiers that almost never leave the base, so the chance of interaction with the "natives" for them is slim at best.
Other than that : Try the local restaurants and stuff. I had some visiors from the US that were really picky about not going into any family restaurant or bar that wasn't part of a big chain. Don't really know if that is a general American prejudice or if it was just them.
Oh, and you can tell us when we do something different than you do in the USA, but please not in every second sentence. ;-)

3. Kind of nostalgic. The Military presence was part of my childhood in the 70th, and now when I go into that areas there are just normal flats and supermarkets.

4. Which is why I would suggest, even when the bases are converted to civil use that some part, maybe the gate house or something, is kept that one still can see that this was once a military installation.

There is really not much negative I can tell you about Americans in Germany, but I hope I could be of help anyway. ;-)
