/ intereting / pretty / blinkey / shiney and educational stuff. 99.9% of it is even OSHW (Open Source HardWare) meaning that the schematics, specifications and other info is open available.

It doesn't take a lot of effort to go flat-broke within 2 minutess in that store.. ;-)

And if you liked these XBees, you might also be interested to know that these exist: 6-axis tilt and compas chip. Could well help with the orientation of the 'critter' in question. ;-) These days one rarely does electronics on a component-level... Manufacturers appear to realise that most innovation comes from hobbyists and provide these modules. Mostly fine by me, really. The annoying part is being done by machines and it leaves more time for me to play with the fun stuff! ^_^
