VERY OLD military maxim: A stupid idea that WORKS is NOT a stupid idea. The losses from the diode junctions will be quite minimal, they ought to do the job for about ever, too.

Sorry to hear about the motor, but given the history (overheating is BAD for these critters!) that it held up this long is a minor miracle.
I hope they get the new motor in, or the old one working again. I wouldn't hold out much hope for that, though. If the Hall effect sensors are gone, then likely it also got hot enough to damage the winding insulation as well. That requires a complete rewind, though the laminated cores should still be usable.
Much patience, a steady hand, and a lot of wire.... Done a few transformers in my time, and even some starter motors (usually for tractors).
