About glitches and successes: on your d6 5's and 6's are successes. 1's are failures. If you have more 1's than you have 5's and 6's, then you, my friend, have encountered a glitch. Apparently that is too simple, so ShadowRun complicated matters of success/failure a little, but it falls in your (the player's) favor. If you have more than 4 dice in a certain skill or test, you can "trade" 4 dice for an automatic success. That works in (dice) lots of 4, so if you had a skill of 9 in something, you could trade 8 dice for 2 automatic successes (treat as 5's) and still roll for that last success.
But there's more: If you decide to employ a point of edge, 6's are successes that "explode", allowing you to roll them again to determine if you got another "cascading" success. Could it get more clear?
So: a final roll for a skill is the skill's level PLUS the attribute upon which it is based. If you have an Archery skill of 2 and an Agility of 4 (the stat upon which the Archery skill is based then you roll (2 + 4) = 6 dice. That much is simple. So this player will have two options: trade 4 dice for one guaranteed (5) success and roll the other two, taking his/her/its chances, or roll all 6 and throw caution to the wind. OR they can expend a point of edge (I think everybody starts with at least 1 point of edge) and then exercise the two options above: trade 4 dice for one guaranteed (5) success and roll the other two, or roll all 6 and take a chance. *BUT* when these dice are rolled, all 6's are not only successes, but they get to be rolled *AGAIN* for more possible successes! Yep, it's possible to use a point of edge and get more successes than you have dice, due to the "explosion of the sixes".
Yeah, you glitched out one of those rolls, but everything else worked out fine.
Now, you observe nothing degenerate nor abominable during your trek to the elevator. You figure this might be a hallway that normal people use on a daily basis. Maybe a stretch, but it's possible. |
