How to enable DVD playback in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) by shadowsystems 2008-04-06 21:09:14
To Enable DVD playback in Ubuntu 7.10
(Taken & condensed from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=396738&highlight=play+dvd ...)

Enable Extra Repositories: System -> Administration -> Software Sources
Make sure that Main, Universe, Restricted, and Multiverse are selected, then click on the Close button.

Add the Medibuntu Repositories
First, open a terminal: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
sudo apt-get install w32codecs

Open the Synaptic Package Manager: System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
Mark the following packages for installation:
libxine-extracodecs
totem-xine
libdvdcss2

Note: installing totem-xine will uninstall totem-gstreamer.
This is OK, because totem-gstreamer has its own issues that may yet require years of therapy.
Click on the Apply button.
Note: when the updates are done installing, you may exit Synaptic.

You're done.
Enjoy the popcorn.
