If you prefer through-hole to surface-mount, I believe the LM2578A is still available as a through-hole 8 pin DIP. It uses a bipolar transistor for switching, so it probably runs a little hotter than the LM5575, which uses a MOSFET for switching.

I also like the suggestion that pbarnrob made for a diode steered parallel 9V battery power in case of problems with the switching regulator. That's good insurance for the cost of two 1N5821 diodes and a battery clip.
