End of a Gnu Day (Hardy Heron review) by toysbfun 2008-04-26 20:54:18
Hardy Heron for PowerPC was probably the best distro I tried on my iBook. As far as I can see, it supports all the PowerPC Macs. While the trackpad wasn't as responsive as under Yellow Dog 5, Hardy Heron did something no other has been able to do: get my wireless card working. It offered to set up the firmware cutter I've never been able to get to work, and then made it work. The only problem is that Linux's power management isn't as good as Mac OS X's. The battery couldn't have lasted more than two hours before it shut down without warning. Unfortunately, there was some sort of error right before that happened, so it's developed a problem I can't fix.

The Gnu OS worked just fine. The only problem was the continuing inability to play with patented, proprietary technology. MP3 support needed to be easily enabled for Amarok and Gnash still had problems with streaming video, but the VLC plugin for Firefox was able to play a nice variety of content. The lack of iTunes would have been the most likely deal breaker if not for the surprise battery problems. Amarok would probably have met my needs, and if not I'm familiar enough with Songbird to fake it. But iPhone means iTunes, which means Mac OS X for me.

I'm getting ready to reinstall Mac OS X now. iPhone 1.2's on the way, so maybe being 0wnz0red won't be so bad ;-)
