Back to the drawing board! by LongFist 2012-12-13 08:58:37
The original "MowBot" plans - and I think I should have run full-speed-ahead with them - called for a single in-one-place "Mother Brain" (Linux PC or whatever) that would conduct/direct several "MowBots" in their endeavors to mow the lawn.  Communications would take place at somewhere near 1/4-watt in the 6M band; totally efficient, totally quiet, and (for me, at least) totally legal.

But there are other options, from awesome comm boards to various and sundry other PLCs - all of the basic building blocks of this project.  And as I re-think the nature of this (these?) beast(s), I see the necessity to re-engineer them to some degree.  Especially because - if I plan correctly - I will be able to produce the "MowBots" for even less!

Having more "MowBots" operating in concert overcomes the intrinsically shorter range that battery-operated electric motors possess.  Having a central command system allows for better coverage than a macro- or script-based system might provide, to say nothing about the flexibility.  So the project has taken a step back - keeping the Propeller as the robot's core (if possible), but re-engineering the communications equipment and various external sensors required to keep these robots from wandering off the range.

I'll update as I learn more.  That's the curse that caused this re-design: I learned more.  But if I can make these things hardier, and run longer per full charge - then that's what I'm going to do - the path that I'm going to take!
