TWO GEEKS LAUNCH A MUCH NEEDED SERVICE 00:02 PST 14 FEB 1999 With much pleasure I announce the launch of Peer 2 Peer, a Geek Contact Service to help UFies everywhere to link up with new friends, penpals and partners. Coded, built and managed by the mighty Arcterex and the ebullient Iambe, Peer 2 Peer offers a way for us generally shy people to find that special someone in time for the next holiday. Way to go, Arc & Iambe! VALENTINES DAY 00:01 PST 14 FEB 1999 Yup, it's that time of the year. Instead of dwelling on the issues of love and lust that Iambe has already covered magnificently, I point you towards a history of Valentine's Day, well worth a few minutes of your time.

| FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT 00:01 PST 13 FEB 1999 Looks like WildOne- one-upped me on keeping backups. The joke he flung at me can be found at his website for all to see, apparently snagging it just a little before they yanked the pages. Guess I'll have to think of some other way to screw up Wild's life. :-)

YOU GUYS BUSTED IT AGAIN, DIDN'T YOU 11:12 PST 12 FEB 1999 Looks like the links to the pranks that WildOne- and I flung back and forth (see: DON'T YOU MESS WITH ME) are FUBARed. If they ever fix it I'll grab the pages and post them on the UF server. Sometimes, sending UFies to a site is like pointing Godzilla at Tokyo. :-) BE IS COOLER THAN COOL 00:52 PST 12 FEB 1999 I swear to the gods, I love Be and BeOS more every day. Trevor over at Be Incorporated was just sitting in the lunchroom when he was snagged by the Codycam wearing a Dust Puppy T-shirt! Thanks Trevor! DON'T YOU MESS WITH ME 00:50 PST 12 FEB 1999 The rabid WildOne- was feeling his oats yesterday so he goes and does this to me. Of course, I can't let him just go and dis me like that, so I nail him with this. Lesson learned, Wild ol' buddy. Don't lock horns with a cartoonist unless you mean it. ;-) [ARCHIVED NEWS]

13% IS BETTER THAN NONE 00:01 PST 11 FEB 1999 An article in the newsgroup rec.arts.comics.strips was pointed out to me: Here are the 20 most-read comic strips at the Comic Strip Cornucopia during the month of January 1999, based on the percentage of pages displayed containing each strip. (In other words, 57% of all pages of comic strips loaded during January included Dilbert. No wonder it has its own TV show.) 1. 57% Dilbert 2. 53% Calvin and Hobbes 3. 41% FoxTrot 4. 34% B.C. 5. 32% Garfield 6. 30% Bizarro 7. 29% Hagar the Horrible 8. 27% Piranha Club 9. 25% Non Sequitur 10. 24% Mother Goose and Grimm 11. 23% Sherman's Lagoon 12. 23% Doonesbury 13. 22% For Better or For Worse 14. 22% Peanuts 15. 21% The Wizard of Id 16. 21% Beetle Bailey 17. 20% Robotman 18. 20% Baby Blues 19. 18% Blondie 20. 18% Rose is Rose The highest ranking non-syndicated strip is "User Friendly", which made the 31st position with a 13% share. Will wonders never cease. Thanks to everyone who helped bring UF to this point. What a roller coaster ride!

ONLY WHEN IT WORKS 00:02 PST 10 FEB 1999 I've gotten hundreds of great stories from people over the last several months (thank you!!), but I'll always welcome more. However, if you don't see your story plopped into a cartoon right away or even ever, don't be surprised or offended. Sometimes a really funny story still might not make it in if it's not right for the strip. Only one person has ever written me about this (she was irked at first, because I didn't use the story right away, then apologetic -- no biggie, we all have bad days), but I figured it deserved public attention to head off future comedy writers with a chip on their shoulder. ;-) HOUSE CLEANING 00:01 PST 10 FEB 1999 I hate it when stuff slips through the cracks. I'm looking for Nicole Davaris, who won the draw on the survey ages ago. Nicole, I lost your e-mail, so please write me when you get a chance.

DIGGING TO THE SURFACE 00:04 PST 09 FEB 1999 I'm not too far on catching up on all of my mail. Give me a few more days and I should be caught up. If I don't write back and you had a specific question, feel free to write me again and remind me about the question you asked. Just another way for me to ensure that the Ivory Tower Syndrome never sets roots here. GEEKSTUFF UPDATE 00:02 PST 09 FEB 1999 Yes, Geekstuff has indeed been updated again. Head on over and see what your Geekstuff Editor has in store for you (one thing is a review of Thief that *ahem* I wrote). Thanks Tricia! CREATIVE FIXES 00:01 PST 09 FEB 1999 Perk sent in this on the SoundBlaster Live! problem addressed yesterday: Hey, I had the problem with the SB Live concerning the modem packing in after a minute or two. I found that simply disabling the SB16 Emulation (that I don't use anyway) resolved the problem. Be sure to disable it, and not delete it because winblows will redetect it if you delete it. YMMV. Also, our very own Linkbrarian Ciannait mentioned she's running the same config and hasn't had anything barf yet, although she notes she's running the SoundBlaster Live! Value. Thanks you two.
