I have stumbled across an actual system for updating UFiles and Fanart...I could lie and say it was a cunning plan on my part: I will update UFiles once a week, every Friday morning with all submissions I receive throughout the week. Our thanks to the UFies who continue to send us magnificent works of art.

| [Yohimbe] PHEAR THE WRATH OF GEEKS | Date:Wed Jul 26 14:51:43 2000 |
| Today, starting at 13:18 PST quite a few members of the userfriendly community were spammed by a VERY persistent spammer. Some people who recieved the email got upwards of 10 copies. One got 90 copies of the same identical email. It was an ad that began "I saw your page and thought it could benefit from our free Video Advertising System". We're not going to name the company or the ISP, because we don't want them to prosper from this. By the way, anyone who recieved this mail is advised to email rbl@mail-abuse.org So in inimitable fashion, the #userfriendly community galvanized into action. Within 2 minutes, the perpetrator was identified. Within 10, Iambe and Rit were both on the phone with the ISP who housed the machine originating the spam. Within an hour of the emails starting, the box responsible was off the net. Thanks to the very helpful ISP. They closed down the site within minutes. This battle, at least, went to the good guys. But to take it a step further: This kind of stuff does demonstrate something: What kind of market research/market intelligence led these people to believe that spam works on geeks? My knee jerk reaction is that the opposite is true. Spam is the quickest way to alienate geeks. What does the community think?

The Free Software Foundation, the people that run the Gnu project, are looking for booth volunteers at Linux World Expo in San Jose. Have you ever typed gcc on a Linux box? How about make? configure? Now's the change to give a little back. If you're going to be at Linux World Expo and would like to donate some of your spare time to a good cause, mail me with times and dates when you'll be available to talk about the FSF and collect donations to keep the Free Software Movement alive.
