| [Illiad] UF STORE ONLINE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE | Date:Thu Jul 26 17:29:03 2001 |
| Finding and keeping a good online merchandise partner has been difficult, but we're back again and we believe we've done it right this time! As is only appropriate with a re-opening, we're featuring some new items: a newly designed Dust Puppy t-shirt, our very first sweatshirt, a two-toned hat, and a new polo/golf shirt for when you feel the need to remain casual with a hint of dressiness. We've also lined up a steady stream of seasonal products: real soon now, you'll see 'Back to School' gear including a backpack, organizer and CD case adorned with various Columbia Internet characters. Items that are not in stock but can be pre-ordered include the ever-popular Dust Puppy plush dolls and UF Book Three, The Root of All Evil published by O'Reilly. We do have some clearance items that won't be coming back in their current forms: the black Dust Puppy hat, the black henley shirt, the DP/Erwin polo shirt, and the Evil Genius in Training t-shirt. Visit the store often since we'll be adding items all of the time! Our sincere thanks to Terry and the Computer Gear crew for making the store and merchandise happen in light-speed time! You can begin your insanity here: http://www.computergear .com/userfriendly.html and, of course, the UF Store officially returns to the permanent site navigation.

| [Illiad] THE SAD SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE | Date:Thu Jul 26 11:29:50 2001 |
It was a pretty good week, until I learned something saddening today. Remember the posters we sent out as a thank you to people who responded to this news item? For the most part, people were honest. But it turns out that forty or fifty respondents decided to lie about their marketing contact. Most of these were international deliveries, by airmail, in a large tube. The tubes came back with the appropriate 'No Such Address' stamp on them. It translated to a lot of wasted time and some expense. We didn't beat around the bush regarding what the posters were for; the rule around here is "no veneer" so you always get the straight goods from us and not doublespeak. In return, we had hoped that people would conduct themselves the same way. Hell, if someone just wanted a poster and couldn't help us out, we probably would've sent them one if they asked nicely enough (and a few people did, and we followed through). But this just isn't right. I'm not soured by this experience, just a little sadder in the knowledge that in an audience I've come to respect and really enjoy, there had to be an element, however small, of people who believe that cheating others is okay as long as they get what they want.
