TRANSLATION SHMANSLATION 00:46 PST 14 MAR 1999 So I got it translated quickly enough (remembered that Altavista has the babelfish service thanks to a few people pointing it out to me). It turns out that the bloody letter was SPAM!! Ooooh, I can see a few more strips coming on... PORTUGESE? QUE? 00:01 PST 14 MAR 1999 Hunh. I got a letter from someone today but it was written entirely in Portugese. Anyone here care to help me out with a translation? If you can grok Portugese, please write me and let me know. I'd really like to know if the writer is flaming me or asking me a question or what. :-)

YOU BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE? 00:01 PST 13 MAR 1999 If you haven't seen it yet, go download it! I've seen the New Episode I Trailer about fifty times now, and it's still an awesome hoot! Do it with a subwoofer! Iambe came over and saw it for the first time and she says "it's a new way to arouse women." Heh. And it's now official. I want to be a Sith Lord when I grow up.

JAMMING MTV 00:12 PST 12 MAR 1999 This in from Logan: For those who haven't heard about it yet... yesterday through a massive nationwide effort, much through email, we the people of America were able to put the New Kids on the Block on MTV's total request live show, completely blowing the minds of the mtv staticians... here's an email I recieved in regard to it: While I very rarely care about MTV (or TV in general) I find it interesting that people on the internet were able to make such an impact on a traditionally non-geek subject. So here's what I'm thinking...what if this is posted in the news section to get a bit of UF effect going for the cause...just go to http://www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan/totalrequest2 click the "play my song" link and at the bottom of the page choose the "other" write in field. I believe the song is Hangin' Tough (by new kids on the block). ALSO... while we're at it, why not advertise through the comments box...if we can get enough people to vote for the song AND mention UF and/or Dust Puppy, they just might put the comments on air get some major exposure for UF... You're all quite mad. UF SIGHTED IN THE UK MEDIA 00:03 PST 12 MAR 1999 Astral Alice in the UK spotted this mention of UF in the British print media: The Guardian's print version of their Online supplement (uhh...) had a column (Second Sight) on page 11 by Douglas Rushkoff: "If I were asked to advise a young person where to go to make money online, I'd tell him to figure out what kinds of online content and activities people enjoy so much that they would accept no substitutes. This doesn't mean the best, wierdest, or most advanced technologies or special effects; someone can always copy a technique or gizmo. It means coming up with ideas, a world view, characters, or insights that are unique. A few - a very few - have already embarked on this path. http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/ is a movie review site with information and a sensibility not available anywhere else. The simple but unique comic strip www.userfriendly.org is only online, and draws over 4 million page views per month. Even text-only sites like www.nerve.com, www.drudgereport.com and www.tvultra.com (to which I contribute) offer voices you can't find elsewhere or easily imitate. The competitive advantage is built in." To be accurate we're actually pulling in about 6 millions page views a month now, but I suppose that was unimportant for the article. Thanks for the news Alice! PINING FOR THE FJORDS 00:01 PST 12 MAR 1999 Hey, danke to all the kind European UFies who offered to show me around their part of the continent if I happen to cruise by there on my way to Norway. I'm leaving Vancouver on the 27th of March, stopping off in Frankfurt for a few hours, then on to Oslo. As far as I know I won't be going beyond the boundaries of Norway (I have no idea what my hosts have planned for me but it's sure to be fun), so if you'd let to get together please consider meeting me at the Gathering. You're bound to find me there. And to the dozen or so people who invited me to Amsterdam: Next time around, I'll be there. :)

POLL #3: LINUX SKILL 00:011 PST 11 MAR 1999 The next poll is up, and it's a really interesting one to a site owner like myself. The question is: How skilled do you consider yourself with Linux? Thanks again to Wild One- for hosting it on his page while I get the errors figured out on my server. :-/ Go vote! UF ACHIEVES SUPEROSITY 00:07 PST 11 MAR 1999 Another spiff award, this time from Chris Crosby at Superosity, another site with a daily cartoon (the review is about halfway down the page). Chris just started his comic, so the archives are a quick read. I like his style, which is reminiscent of something that I can't put my finger on. Anyway, thanks to Chris for the kind review, and best of luck to yet another struggling fellow cartoonist who's dumb enough to do a daily. :-) OK UFIES, LET'S DEW IT! 00:05 PST 11 MAR 1999 This in from bizzybody: If you haven't noticed, or you avoid Pepsi Co. products like the plague, they are giving away 3,125 pairs of tickets (airfare, accommodations, cash - Illiad) to ANY "publically ticketed event" in the USA between the dates of February 15, 1999 and January 15, 2000. There's more info on this on a webpage that bizzybody set up for the UFie community. Thanks biz! THE ONLY WORD I KNOW IS 'FJORD' 00:01 PST 11 MAR 1999 In case you didn't notice the bulletin above the cartoon strip, I'm on my way to Hamar, Norway, to attend The Gathering, Europe's biggest LAN party, as Guest of Honour. I've always wanted to visit Norway and now's my chance -- this is also my first time in Europe! My thanks to the Gathering organizers and especially to Vegard "Shady" Skjefstad (do Norwegians have cool names or what?) for bringing me over!

| ANOTHER BATCH FILE 00:06 PST 10 MAR 1999 The book deal I've been waiting for is nearing a signing and sealing. And it's a bit of a surprise too. I'll keep you all posted. Manic UFie WildOne- increments his chronological value by one today. Happy Birthday, ya rabid freak. A quick public thank you to the UFie Chain Gang (you know who you are) for contributing to the site and everything UF -- I figure if I keep thanking you regularly you'll feel forever obligated to me. ;-) Finally, in case you need another reason to feel screwed, blewed and tattooed by the Evil Empire, check this out. NEW FILE SECTION ON THE WAY 00:04 PST 10 MAR 1999 The Neat Files and Fan Art sections are soon to be amalgamated into one. I don't have a name for it yet, but if you have a suggestion, write me. I also have about half a dozen new art submissions (they're all pretty spiff too, including a PRC file for the PalmPilot!) that I'm holding onto until the new section is up. WHAT HAPPENED AFTER FEB 23? 00:01 PST 10 MAR 1999 I've gotten a few -- less than twenty -- letters so far from people who can't seem to view the cartoons (or even the News or Static) after February 23rd. That happens to be the day when we switched IPs for the site, so it's entirely possible that UF's old IP was hardcoded into your DNS (and thus failed to update when we moved over). You might want to check with whomever is the Domain Guru where you are. Hope that helps some of you folks out there.

XOOM QUIETLY BACKPEDALS 00:03 PST 09 MAR 1999 This in from Rii regarding the frames and logo-stamping that free web host Xoom was sneaking in: Just a note to let you know that the frames appear to have left Xoom, just as quietly as they appeared! It renews one's faith in humanity. Thank you for spreading the word! De nada. Mini-crusades can be fun. :) VMWARE INFO TIDBIT 00:01 PST 09 MAR 1999 A few people asked about VMWare, the spiff-looking virtual machine software that VA Research was demonstrating at Linux World Expo. I got in touch with Chris DiBona, Director of Marketing and overall smart VA dude about it. They don't have any official spec info yet, but he did pass this on to me: VMWare runs about 80% speed, and it is not an open source project. Not OSS? Who cares. I want it! Thanks, Chris!

BANKS POKING AROUND A NO-NO SAYS CONGRESS 00:10 PST 08 MAR 1999 This in from Lord Xar regarding the FDIC issue that's been flying around here the last week or so: You might wanna pass this onto the UFie's. The idea of a bank being required to notify the government regarding "unusual" transactions or whatever, was totally shot down in congress by a unanimous 88-0 vote. Here's the link: http://www.wired.com/news/news/politics/story/18311.html GEEKSTUFF UPDATED 00:07 PST 08 MAR 1999 Tricia has updated the Geekstuff section once again (actually a few days ago, but San Jose got in the way and I forgot to mention it), and she's working on something muy cool with Kethryvis; details as they get closer to completion. EVEN THE CRACKERS SAY SO 00:04 PST 08 MAR 1999 Quite the compliment. This news item is from Andrew Maguhn over at Seagate Software: I was not sure if you were aware of this, but there was a hacked ISP web site on October 31st 1998. The web site, which is now archived on 2600: The Hackers Quarterly's site http://www.2600.com/hackedphiles/wzrd/hacked/, was of a New York based ISP Wizard Communications Systems. The hack included a greetings to some people and a link to www.userfriendly.org. The comment with the link was "The funniest computer related comic strip on earth". Warning, the archived hack does contain profanity. POLL #2 RESULTS 00:01 PST 08 MAR 1999 OK, the second official UF poll is over. What do you think of using java menus throughout the UF site? Java bites the big one: 47.89%; Java is okay: 32.11%; Java rocks: 17.46%; Huh? Coffee?: 2.54%. Since we have almost half of the votes against Java, and the next largest portion of the votes feeling lukewarm about it, we'll be taking down the Java menus over the next few days, going back to text-only for now. We'll have another solution coming. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote!
