| [Kethryvis] AND YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD RIGHTS WHEN YOU BUY SOFTWARE | Date:Sun Feb 6 20:13:28 2000 |
| A friend sent this to me today and I immediatly got shivers. Basically software companies (can anyone say Microsoft?) are quietly pushing bills through various state senates in the US to dilute customer rights. If these laws pass, companies could legally log into their customer's computers and turn off programs if they fall behind in payments, e-mail could become legal notification for *anything* pertaining to the contract (and we know how reliable email can be at times), NDA's could be used against letting consumers post reviews of products (especially critical reviews), and a host of other provisions that just chilled me to the bone. While I understand that companies are out there to make money and they need to protect their programs, I think these bills are taking it a bit too far. So what can you do? Write your state legislators (not your State's reps to the US Senate, these are state bills) and let them know you're against the signing of these bills and give them your reasons. Speak out!!

| [Kethryvis] UFIE VOLUNTEERS ROCK MY WORLD | Date:Sun Feb 6 13:42:48 2000 |
| Illiad summed up LWE pretty well, but I just wanted to add my great big huge thank yous to our UFie volunteers: babySEA, rynsey, Dv8or, Ardaniel, and Rachael. Big *huge* thanks to Lisha and Gruuk who showed up at LWE and helped out anyway. You all were big HUGE helps and the show could not have happened without you! Also :"mad props" go to ryns and Rachael who had the task of wearing our big DP... you guys were great!! As soon as I'm alive, I'll be posting pictures of our big Dust Puppy but right now, my brain is too fried even to do HTML. :)

| LINUX WORLD EXPO AFTER ACTION REPORT | Date:Sat Feb 5 23:54:54 2000 |
| What turned out to be the largest LWE yet was nothing short of astonishing, with all of the new products, services and directions that the present companies were revealing. Add to that the surprise announcements (such as the VA Linux - Andover acquisition) and of course the six foot tall Dust Puppy walking around ;) and it was a consistently fibrillating event. Sadly, I didn't get to spend as much time on the show floor as I would've liked. I did get the opportunity to meet folks and sign books and t-shirts (I signed Alan Cox's shirt while he was still wearing it because, well, I didn't want him to take it off) at the UF booth, the SuSE booth and the O'Reilly booth, and that was as usual a really pleasant time. A tip of the hat to the booth volunteers: Rynsey, babySEA, Ardaniel, Dv8tor, Wildcard, Rachael, and Lisha (if I forgot anyone please forgive me, I left most of my lucidity back on the airplane). I understand that we have some photos showing up from the show and our hard-working Community Coordinator Kethryvis will be posting them with commentary on the site fairly soon. I'll be taking the next week off to recover and recharge, and I won't be anywhere near a computer during that time, so any e-mail will likely remain unanswered until I get back. Please be patient while I try to collect all of my marbles again. Oh look, there goes one, I'd better go catch it before it rolls away. See you all in the middle of the month. - Illiad

| NO MORE SURVEY DISTRESS | Date:Thu Feb 3 08:31:00 2000 |
My darling Yohimbe and I have finished beating up the database and now it will behave. For those good UFies who submitted the survey and got a "db full" message, your answers have been parsed and saved...you do not need to repeat the survey.

| [WebDiva D] AWWW, HE SAYS THE SWEETEST THINGS | Date:Mon Jan 31 21:53:12 2000 |
| Our very own MarketingCzarinaM recently sent this UF book review around for the staffers to peruse: an excerpt from Geek Giggles by Mitchell Brown Let's just admit it: Geeks rule. Somewhere, somehow, all those people you once thought had no life outside of the school computer lab grew up and took over the world. Not that leadership is all wine and roses (or, as the case may be, Mountain Dew and stock options). There are still a lot of things out there that can really, really annoy a computer geek. Software bugs, for one. A certain company's quest for world domination. Bosses who don't have a clue when it comes to managing a computer system. The list goes on. And we can only hope it does, because it will be a sad day if Illiad runs out of things to lampoon. To read the rest of the review, take a look at Geek Giggles by Mitchell Brown

| [WebDiva D] QUAKE III ARENA PUPPY | Date:Mon Jan 31 21:38:23 2000 |
| We get so many emails about the Dust Puppy sighting--or not--in Q3A. Sebastian was sweet enough to record his demise and subsequent puppy sighting in 3 jpgs. The map in question is Q3DM16 - The Bouncy Map. As you can see it's basically a platform floating over the big, black void...dangerous, but it's not easy to fall from it. But if you're dumb enough to jump out of it, or a rocket blast sends you flying away, you might fall into the void and if you try to look back up to send a last rocket to your enemy, you see this: There... right in the middle of the bottom...DUST PUPPY!!!!... Waiting to say good bye. But it's really nice that the last face you see before dying is warm and fuzzy Dust Puppy. Best wishes, from Caracas, Venezuela.. q3a_puppy1.jpg q3a_puppy2.jpg q3a_puppy3.jpg Gracias, Sebastian

| DISCONNECTIVITY | Date:Mon Jan 31 09:02:51 2000 |
| Sorry for the lateness of the strip today folks; my ADSL connection cooked itself last night and I had to come into the office today to load up the page. I'm leaving for New York in a few hours and will be there until Saturday. E-mail access for me may be sparse, unless I can get my STUPID MODEM to work on my VAIO, so please bear with me if you're mailing me with questions. If you're showing up at LWE, please be sure to drop by the booth and say hello! I'll see everyone on the Other Coast!
