| [Illiad] USER FRIENDLY ARTICLE IN LINUX MAGAZINE NOW ON-LINE | Date:Sat May 27 23:42:56 2000 |
As requested by a goodly number of people, here's the link to the article on UF in the March 2000 issue of Linux Magazine. Credit should go to Bob McMillan, who edited the article and actually gave it some shine.

| [Illiad] NAUGHTINESS FOR 'DUMMIES' | Date:Thu May 25 18:45:54 2000 |
| RobNLee sent in this useful piece: http://www.naag.org/features/microsoft2.html Spin doctors, zombie cheerleaders and M$ posturing aside - I suggest you urge readers to check out this readable rebuttal of M$ efforts to squirm out of the light of day. The actual damage done by M$, how we've been injured by their actions and their sleazy efforts to maintain their empire of evil ... few people are bothered to look beyond the sound 'bytes' and see what they actually did. Not all your readership are hardcore technophiles; maybe this might free some from M$ brainwashing - "They can't be that bad - everyone uses their stuff!" Read, disseminate, and draw your own conclusions.

| [Kethryvis] BIG EUROPEAN UFIE MEET! | Date:Thu May 25 15:20:33 2000 |
| A while back, I posted a note on the Community section about a few UFies wanting to get together and throw a huge UFie meet for all European UFies, but needed someone to help organize it. Well, UFie Silje is the brave soul who has offered to coordinate this large gathering. Details will be forthcoming, but first off they need to be assured that LOTS of European UFies will be showing up! So if you're in Europe or will be in Europe this summer and are interested in meeting some new UFies, shoot Silje an email! A place has yet to be determined... it depends on how many people respond. The country with the largest response will most likely be the hosting country, if not Silje's home of Bergen og Oslo in Norway will have the honour. We want this to be huge huge huge, so shoot Silje an email and let's have a meet!

| [WebDiva D] A SATISFIED UF SHOPPER | Date:Wed May 24 12:08:47 2000 |
| Mike C was one of the first folks to order the oversized tees recently added to the UFStore. Today he writes: I just got my shirt in the post today, and I'm very pleased. The quality of the shirt is good, and the size runs large (I usually wear a 6XL, and the 5XL was big on me). The real reason I'm writing, though, is to thank you for producing a large size shirt! It's very difficult to find clothes in my size that let my inner geek shine through, and it's a real pleasure to find one from my favourite comic strip. I hope that it is a trend that continues and spreads! Thanks, Mike! Happy Evil Genius to you.

| [WebDiva D] UFILES AND FANART | Date:Wed May 24 11:59:28 2000 |
There have been a few new pieces of fan art added to UFiles today. Over the next while UF will also be adding to this section: we thought the Character Gallery idea from Survey 2000 was an awesome one! Makes sense to us to add the Gallery to UFiles so that all your UF art/icons/buttons/ etc are in one place. We are putting together the proposed contents of each gallery now, and will be soliciting ideas and submissions from UFies very soon. Meantime, if you have any UF Fan Art you want to submit, send it in

| [Wildcard] THE UGLY FACE OF CENSORSHIP: WHAT DON'T -YOU- WANT TO SEE? | Date:Wed May 24 10:00:59 2000 |
Ok, it was bound to happen eventually. Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long. UF decided to remove a posting that was considered offensive and off-topic. None of us here agree with censorship on any kind, but we're also don't want to have Adult-Check(tm) on the way into the commenting system. We'd greatly appreciate your feedback. How much is too much? What should be "moderated down"? These are questions that I feel the community should have input into. We'd like to hear what you have to say before we come up with any strict policy rules.

| [Illiad] OFF TO HAVE A PINT IN LONDON | Date:Wed May 24 01:40:11 2000 |
| I'm leaving for London next week to attend the London Linux Expo, and the saddest thing is that I gave up alcohol of any kind last year when I started this sick and twisted fitness thing. :) More details of where I'll be at the Expo and at what times will be made available soon here. In the meantime, I'd love to hear some ideas about where to go in London, and can anyone tell me if Gatwick airport is connected to the Tube? I'll skip the warm beer, but I'm all for making off with one of those hairy hats the Guards wear at Buckingham Palace.

| [Illiad] DOWN THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD | Date:Wed May 24 01:22:28 2000 |
...we go. My thanks to WebDiva and Yohimbe for weathering a not-insubstantial storm of e-mail over the site developments and to everyone who wrote in with constructive criticism and supportive comments. We're still developing features and processes that will discourage trolls and flames in the comment system, so never fear, that problem will be promptly and softly stomped all over. :) We're still - as always - listening, so please keep writing in with your ideas and suggestions.

| [Yohimbe] THE SOURCE... | Date:Tue May 23 16:15:41 2000 |
I've had several emails from people asking about the source for our commenting system. It is still in flux right now, but we committed to putting it under the artistic license a while back. We have a CVS repository up and a tarball available. Those wishing to use it are requested to Email me because I'd like to have an idea of the number of people interested. The source is available in a sporadically updated tarball on this server http://ars.userfriendly.org/UfPosting.tar.gz

| [WebDiva D and Yohimbe] AND NOW FOR OUR NEXT TRICK... | Date:Tue May 23 11:50:25 2000 |
| There are a few things we are working on with respect to the new system this week (and especially today). Currently in the works: - the pencils will be coming back - Classic Archive (the cartoon archive the way it was before the comment system) - Comment control user preferences (to choose your preferred view, either with or without comments) - Previous Week of Cartoons reverts to text links
Thanks to the many hundreds of UFies who have participated in the new system so far and provided us with valuable feedback. We're still listening...

| [Illiad] THOSE FAT PENCILS | Date:Mon May 22 00:56:29 2000 |
| I think we got the picture. Everyone wants the navigation "pencils" back in the archive. Let it be known that the hard-working WebDiva and Yohimbe are well aware of this and that they have it on their priority to-do list. Any other suggestions? Another idea that has been brought up is a setting in your account so that you can set the comments default to none, indexed, fully threaded and non-threaded. Anyway, we're listening...
