DECSS IN SUNDAY'S CARTOONDate:Sat Jan 15 23:51:43 2000
To head off the inevitable questions: Yep, that's actual DeCSS source you see in Sunday's cartoon. Not all of the code by a long stretch, but the spirit remains. ;)

If we get enough interest, we might consider doing a t-shirt based on the cartoon, or cut a licensing deal with someone else.

VIGOR BECOMES A REALITYDate:Sat Jan 15 23:01:40 2000

For Immediate Release
Mountain View, CA. In a recent fit of madness, hacker Joel Holveck, has released Vigor, a version of the popular Unix editor vi featuring the Vigor Assistant. Holveck declined to comment on his true motives for creating the program, although it has been confirmed that he was inspired by Pitr of User Friendly the Comic Strip. A supporter of the Free Software Foundation, Holveck denies rumors that he created the program as part of a plot to encourage the use of Emacs based on Greg's 10 Jan comment. Vigor is currently available online at http://www.red-bean.com/~joelh/vigor/ and is expected to undergo daily improvements based on user input for the next several days.

[I swear, it was all Joel's fault. - Illiad]

MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION AT IT AGAINDate:Fri Jan 14 22:02:59 2000
This already has heaps of coverage elsewhere but I want to make sure it gets as much exposure as possible, so I'm putting in what I can.

This is a good place to start on reading up about the MPAA's suit, especially the Short News section. There's another report over at slashdot that's also worth reading.

In a nutshell, the MPAA is going after the defendants to protect their business model. This is akin to the record labels going after MP3 technology, in an effort to maintain control of content distribution.

Finally, there's more of this issue over at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

SHOULDA TAKEN THE MAGENTA PILLDate:Fri Jan 14 10:32:52 2000
I swear, each new page of cr0bar's Matrix Parody gets more and more surreal, but DAMN is it funny. Just to throw in more of the acid-blast to what he's doing, references (rather direct, visual ones) are made to three Web cartoons in today's addition. (Yes, "addition," not "edition.") Thanks, Ant!

EXPERIMENTS WITH AOLDate:Thu Jan 13 23:53:07 2000
This entertaining bit in from Kiwi:

For all you non-creative folx out there in UFland, here's an opportunity you don't want to miss! Without wasting precious surfing time on shiny, ever-rainbow trees, you, too, can participate in the Creative Uses For AOL CD's Campaign. Send unwanted AOL or other ISP CD's to Kiwi to become candle holders, objects of scientific experiment, or whatever else her little heart desires. She promises not to send them back, once mutilated. However, you are welcome to join the email list for Interesting Discoveries of Kiwi's Candle Experiments, as long as you absolve her of all responsibility for injuries resulting from imitation. Kiwi is not a pyromaniac, but an avid pyrologist. The difference? A pretty University ID to prove she's edjumicated.

Send me email to request an address to snail mail stuff to.

PEDANTRY? NOPE, JUST PRECISIONDate:Tue Jan 11 22:31:00 2000
David Tribble sent this in:

In your 1999-12-31 strip, Stef mentions that "Y2K" should be AD 2048 instead of AD 2000, since "K" equals 1024. It should be pointed out that IBM OS/370 will suffer a "Y2K" problem in AD 2042. This is due to the way the O/S counts time, which is a 64-bit number of ticks since 1900-01-01 00:00:00 GMT, where 2^20 microsecond ticks equals one "long" second. Adding all of this up means that the 64-bit tick counters will "run out of bits" on 2042-09-17.

Granted, 2042 isn't quite 2048, but it's close enough to be more than a simple coincidence, right? ;-)

Also, http://www.aopa.ch/xtech.htm mentions:

A popular abbreviation of "year-2000" is Y2K. However, while "k" stands for decimal kilo (1000, start counting at 1), a capital "K" means a binary kilo which is 1024 counted from 0 to 1023. Thus, Y2K is 2047 but should read Y2k =2000.

Several other Y2K-related web sites, such as "John Stockton's Critical and Significant Dates" page (http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/critdate.htm) also use "Y2k" instead of "Y2K".
