| [Kethryvis] CAN'T GET YOUR UFIE IRC FIX? *UPDATED* | Date:Thu Jan 4 15:40:08 2001 |
| If you're a #userfriendly regular, or you're a patron of Undernet, you've noticed that the servers are pretty borked....moreso than usual. Someone has decided to DDoS the servers, and some other folks decided to target the rest of the servers as well. This Article over at Slashdot basically tells the whole story. This could spell the end of Undernet as we know it. But do not fret! Our good friend (and Lord UFie) Arcterex, the dude behind UFies.org reminded me that we do have a small presence on another server. ArcNet is a much smaller IRC network which is maintained by #userfriendly regular Squiz and his company. Head here for a list of servers, or just connect to irc.ufies.org. And as an aside... why the heck do people do this crap?? They're not getting anything material out of it, and all they're doing is getting people with a *lot* of computer expertise ticked off at them. What's the point? UPDATE: 0146 2001.01.09 A nice way to help out the folks at Undernet is by e-mailing a polite, supportive letter to the ISPs who are involved with the network and asking them not to null route their servers. When it comes down to it, IRC networks exist because people use them, and that existance can be made very tenuous in circumstances such as these. Let's show some gratitude to a service that exists for us.

| [Wildcard] TOO MANY CELL PHONES | Date:Thu Jan 4 15:34:01 2001 |
| So I'm looking to get a cell phone and service. I decided to poke around the net last night to look at specs and prices. The conclusion I came to: there are FAR too many cell phones on the market. It seems easier to find the 'best' video card than a cell phone with the exact set of features you want. My requirements were: relatively small, vibrating ring option, caller id and reasonabally priced. Other "cute" features would be a web browser and programmable ring. It also has to operate in North America. What do you think?

The mighty Arcterex, Lord of UFiedom, has given a complete revamp to ufies.org. Oooh, it's so purty! Naturally, as all good UFies visit ufies.org right after reading the Daily Static this is not news to you all, per se, but rather an official wh00t to ufies.org from the mothership.

| [Illiad] HAPPY NEW MILLENNIUM! | Date:Tue Jan 2 03:58:52 2001 |
| Welcome back to the Real World®, folks. :) I had a fine bringing-in-the-new-time-period evening, and didn't have to worry about recovering since I'm Not Quaffing Alcohol these days. Nope, not even a beer. In fact, I feel positively healthy and am enjoying the added benefits of exercising regularly again. Obviously, something odd has happened to me and I need to fix it. Well. In time. The year 2000 was a hectic and quasi-dimensional year for myself and for UF. If the last year was any indication, 2001 should be even more hectic, and fun, and maniacal. We do have a few major announcements coming up, but I'll have to hold off on those for a little while until I have all of the information in. I really just wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you back and, on behalf of the rest of the staff, wish you all a really terrific 2001!
