I HATE EXPLAINING CARTOONS...
00:08 PDT 11 JUL 1999
...but I will this once, because it assumes that you read the latest technology news. Check out this article and it should become clear. Well. I hope so anyway. :-)

DON'T...TEMPT...ME...
00:01 PDT 10 JUL 1999
Does anyone remember the rather boisterous attack that the UFie community launched on TIME/Pathfinder's servers when the Man of the Year poll was taking place? Here's something vaguely similar, and an obvious challenge at that. Thanks to Jonathan Norburg for ferreting this out.

ORIGINAL ART FOR AUCTION
00:16 PDT 09 JUL 1999
Two original illustrations done by yours truly will be up for auction in a week or so. The starting bid will be US$1.00 for each, and there will be no reserve price. The first one is ink on canvas (weird maybe, but it got the fuzzy effect across well), and the second one is ink on illustration board. So's you know, 50% of the final bid will be donated to the User Friendly Project for Humanity. It's a good cause, and what you buy may be worth a little in a few years. ;-)

All of the ISP customers, staff, their friends and family are invited and this year they'd like to welcome the UFie community as well. If you live in or near the Lower Mainland, please feel free to drop by. More details regarding the picnic can be found at http://www.paralynx.com/news/37.htm.

DUST PUPPY INSIDE STICKERS STILL AVAILABLE
00:06 PDT 08 JUL 1999
Due to some naughty people bouncing a cheque or two on David Lew, there are still some Dust Puppy Inside Stickers available for purchase. Grab 'em before they're gone for sure this time! :)

PALM V ORGANIZERS AS PRIZES
00:03 PDT 08 JUL 1999
The folks at Webforia are giving away (among some other prizes) six 3Com Palm V Connected Organizers. All you have to do is sign up as a beta tester for one or both of their new software products and you're entered. Personally I think the idea behind their Reporter software is spiffy-keen, but that's because I love documentation technology -- ya shoulda seen me get all wibbly over the first releases of Adobe Acrobat.

THE PITR COFFEE MUG!
00:03 PDT 08 JUL 1999
Yup, you read it right. User Friendly is proud to announce the 'Pitr Coffee Mug'! The mug is stainless steel with black handle and travel lid, and big enough for that extra dose of coffee. As with everything we do for the UFie community, this is one high-quality mug (and besides, we can't risk shipping ceramic mugs). On the side of the steel surface of the mug is an illustration of everyone's favorite bastage Pitr thinking to himself 'What evil shall I do today?', a question most sysadmins ask themselves before the coffee hits their system. Check out the new shopping cart we have in the merchandise section, and get your order in before the stock vanishes!

MORE MATRIX
00:01 PDT 08 JUL 1999
From Shayne the DVD Guru: Dude, I feel the need to clarify what Spigot has clarified. What WB is doing is this: Matrix, like all releases, is being released at 'rental' price, which is something like 115 US or some such. What they're NOT doing is a few months later dropping down to 'sellthrough' price, which is 15-25 US or whatever. If you feel like dropping 115, you go right ahead and buy it, no problem. Also, if you wait six months, chances are that your friendly vid rental outlet is going to have 200 copies, and only has shelfspace for 10 (while the next blockbuster comes out and needs the shelf space that Matrix *was* using, you see) and will sell it to you at quite favourable prices, but at that point caveat emptor. But to my knowledge, Warner hasn't forbidden those types of sales either. So, to reiterate, Warner ins't refusing to sell the VHS, they're just not *pricing* to sell on VHS. As to teens not having access to DVD; How many computers are sold with a DVD-ROM these days? :-) Touche, mon Guru!

CLEARING UP THE MATRIX
00:02 PDT 07 JUL 1999
From Spigot: I saw the news article on the Matrix not being released on VHS and thought I'd clarify it. I read an article on ROUGHCUT.COM (great movie site) re: this issue. Actually, what Warner is doing is not releasing The Matrix to buy on VHS. You can still rent it, but if you want to own it, you have to buy the DVD. They're claiming this is because less 'teens' have access to a DVD player. As you say, pretty lame argument, especially when you consider the fact that the biggest complaint about the Matrix (post-Columbine) is the fact that the main characters wear black trenchcoats. Sure, it's violent, but nowhere near as violent as many other films available to buy (e.g. Natural Born Killers, etc.)

SECOND INSTALLMENT OF THE ALTERNATE OS ADS
09:52 PDT 06 JUL 1999
Here it is, the second installment of the Alternate OS Ads (AOSA) that I'm busily cranking out. The third one should be done by the end of this week, all things considered.

UF GETS RECOGNITION IN LINUX MAGAZINE
09:50 PDT 06 JUL 1999
It seems in this month's copy of Linux Magazine UF gets a mention. From Arcterex's site at ufies.org: On page 10 of Vol 1, Issue 3, the following was sighted: User Friendly Available in Print The secret, daily lives of Internet workers will soon be revealed as Illiad, creator of User Friendly: The Comic Strip, signed on with O'Reilly & Associates to pubish a book of his work, due out in stores in October 1999. After entertaining on-line audiences for almost two years, UF, as it is affectionately called, attracted a dedicated following that surpasses monthly circulation numbers of most leading computer magazines. It has gone on to become the most widely read web-based cartoon on the Internet today. Thousands of people on the Web read and contribute to the strip every day. The UF website is a division of ParaSun Technologies Inc., an Internet access and entertainment company co-founded by Illiad in 1997. For further information, visit http://www.userfriendly.org. Sweet. Thanks for the heads up, Arc!

LATE UPDATE -- MORE NEWS TO COME
03:03 PDT 06 JUL 1999
Sorry for the unusually late update, but something has kept me really busy -- I'll post a pile of the promised news items later in the day, probably around noon Pacific Time. The problem should be fixed by then.

MUCH TO COME YET
00:04 PDT 05 JUL 1999
The facelift on the Static is just the first step of a pile of new features coming; the entire site will be overhauled and you'll be seeing some new and spiffy additions. Plus -- I'll be burning the candle at both ends to provide you with new wallpaper, weird UF art, and some thick reviews (particularly my review of The Gathering '99 that took place in Norway -- I've had almost no time until now to get it done; I'm almost there). Throw in some new sections and some random chaos and you'll have a bag 'o' fun come this August. And remember when I asked for suggestions on what geek stuff you'd like deep discounts on? I'm still working on some deals there. If there's something else you'd like to see addressed or have an idea you think is worth considering, by all means write me and let me know. And NO, publishing more than one strip a day is not on the table. :-b

CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED TOMORROW
00:02 PDT 05 JUL 1999
I have the winners of two of the three contests already picked out, and if all goes well I'll have the third contest winner chosen by tomorrow. I'll announce all three at the same time, so the people who win can do the higgy-jiggy dance of joy together. Well. Virtually, maybe.

THE FEAR FOLLOWS US
00:01 PDT 05 JUL 1999
Synbad sent in this tidbit: According to The Den, The Matrix will not be released on VHS, because of Warner Bros.' fear that teenagers may rent or buy it, and because it features people in trenchcoats shooting people, it may inspire another incident like Littleton, CO. Hmmm. Seems like a weak argument to me, especially if DVD rapidly becomes pervasive.
