[Illiad] FILTERING OUT THE NAPALMDate:Sun May 21 23:30:25 2000
CaptJoe wrote a very thoughtful message about the launch of the ARS and Comment System, specifically addressing the issue of having comments under the cartoons. I urge folks to go read it and respond with whatever constructive thoughts you might have.

[Wildcard] GEEK ACTIVITY FEEDBACKDate:Sun May 21 19:19:54 2000
What do geeks do when they've come home from work? How about on the weekends? Vacation? We just got this new commenting system up, so let's exploit it. I reciently moved to Vancouver and I'm looking for ideas on new things to do. Given the turnover rate in the computer industry, I'd imagine geeks find themselves in this situation quite a bit. I'd love some ideas on Stuff To Do Other Than Drinking, places to meet people, etc. and I'm sure there are others in this situation also.

[Yohimbe] THE COMMENTS SYSTEMDate:Sat May 20 13:57:54 2000
Wow first day and there are already over 600 sign ups. I'm very pleased. I honestly didn't expect this good of response. As with any new software, we had some bug reports:

First and foremost, we have a fix in place for the page width thing. Please feel free to email me if you are still having problems.

Secondly, the links in the archive section are fixed. Thanks to the many who emailed about that.

Next, a couple silly bugs have been fixed with missing or improperly done links and page headers. Ooops, my bad.

[WebDiva D, Yohimbe, Kethyrvis and Wildcard] BIG THANKS AND GIANT SIGHS OF RELIEFDate:Fri May 19 19:48:52 2000
The new look has been applied to the site. Thank you all for being patient with us while we dragged our heels to make sure everything would be "just so". The Cartoon and News Comment system is alive, alive, alive!! Get yourself registered and start participating, if you haven't already.

A *huge* rain of hugs and gratitude to the many UFies who have assisted in the building, testing and refining of the Comment System. Special gratitude to sad|st, rit, Ardie, Rynsey, javajawa, Axiom, ChrisL, TopQuark, Dire_Wolf, Gruuk, Llarian, Tig, Sillz, Tik-Tok, the all-mighty Arcterex, and to everyone on channel #userfriendly and the site who responded to our calls for testing, breaking, fixing, help and/or diversion at various strange times of the day and night these last several months. You will be rewarded with many Geekpoints.

We still have several other enhancements and additions to User Friendly in the works, many from site suggestions in the UF Survey 2000...but dang, folks, it feels sooooo good to have this project completed!

UF staffers do the happy dance

[Illiad] HELLO? HELLO? IS THIS THING ON?Date:Wed May 17 22:24:54 2000
Hey folks, just a note to let you know that we aren't quiet because there's nothing to say, just that we're busy with a pile of things here and that you'll be seeing the results of all of that hard work shortly. Sure enough, one of those items is the ARS and Comment System that Yohimbe, WebDiva and Wildcard have been slaving over for the last few months, and once the public beta is completed (that would be Real Soon Now) we'll be clearing the database and deploying the technology. And to head off the questions: Yes, we are indeed Open-Sourcing the ARS.

Another thing you'll be seeing in a short while is the introduction of Geekpoints, essentially a reward system to you Phine Pholks for contributing to the our community. The points will be redeemable for cool stuff, and more details about that will be released as we get closer to launch.

Finally, I have an apology to make to everyone who's written to me or who has been trying to communicate with me for the past few months. As an explanation, not an excuse, I made the huge mistake of thinking I could "do it all." Fact is, I can't, so I passed on my management duties to more able people than myself (WebDiva and Smiling Man) so that I could concentrate on the things I love doing the most: the cartoon, mingling with the community, and creating new things for you to enjoy. If you e-mailed me in the past 2-3 months and haven't received a reply, rest assured I'm trying to catch up. If you still don't hear back from me by the end of May, write me again if you'd like and I'll be sure to reply pronto.

And that's the State of the Onion for May 17, 2000. Film at eleven.
