| IS YOUR MAIL THING UP? 09:26 PST 09 OCT 1998 Mamidael managed to wrangle a mailing list for the UFie community. Thanks to mongo for setting it up. If you want in, just send mail to majordomo@chia.net and put subscribe userfriendly in the body of the text. AN ARRAY OF UFIES ONLINE 09:19 PST 09 OCT 1998 In case you hadn't heard, there's a permanent User Friendly IRC channel at Undernet; the channel name is #userfriendly, naturally. Thanks to Arcterex and TiggerSol for getting it going. There's even a bot in there named Erwin. ;) WINDOWMAKER THEMES 09:15 PST 09 OCT 1998 Of course Pitr didn't put Stef in front of a Linux box with KDE. What kind of Evil Genius would he be if he did? But back to the real topic: I was just pointed at a Windowmaker User Friendly theme done by BigNose. The theme is available at http://wm.themes.org/newthemes.html. You need to be running X to use this.

A MERGER AND AN ACQUISITION 08:55 PST 08 OCT 1998 It looks like people like the idea of expanding the Daily Static to two pages, merging this news section with the daily comic and links. Any other thoughts on this? Now to the potential 'acquisition'. What do people think of a permanent User Friendly IRC channel? I've been offered one, but unless I know people will use it (even just to hang out in), I don't want to waste resources. Write me, or start a discussion in the Friendly Forum. SIGHTED! 08:53 PST 08 OCT 1998 The strip received a way flattering mention at TechSightings this morning. Hopefully this brings us one-step closer to UFie world domination. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants for old Microsquash? Thanks to Adam for pointing it out to me.

TODAY NORWAY, TOMORROW...ANDORRA? 10:13 PST 07 OCT 1998 The world will hopefully come later. The folks over at the way cool tech magazine digi.no in Norway (www.digi.no) reviewed the comic strip. If you can read Norwegian, you might enjoy the article. If you're illiterate when it comes to things Nordic like me, you can check out the English translation supplied by Nina Furu, who wrote the article. Thanks Nina! UPPING THE ANTE 10:08 PST 07 OCT 1998 I've been listening carefully to what people have been saying recently regarding User Friendly and all that goes on around it. Some minor developments are in the pipe now; with any luck and lots of elbow grease you'll see the fruits of all that labour on the first anniversary of the strip. In the meantime: what would you all like to see on the Web site? Format changes? Grouping news with the Daily Static (but bumping the DS up to two or maybe three pages)? A dedicated IRC channel? A newsgroup? Just name it and let me know. You know how I like to please. :)

A BOOK BEFORE THE BOOK? 09:23 PST 06 OCT 1998 While we're all waiting for the publisher I'm negotiating with to sign off on the idea of a User Friendly compilation, I cut a deal with John S. Flowers, the author of the upcoming New Riders book 'Linux Security'. The book should be released in February of next year, and will contain approximately ten selected User Friendly strips used as chapter breaks. So if you're in the market for a book on Linux security, you might want to grab this one. FYI: ISBN 0-7357-003504.

A HISTORY OF LINKS 12:40 PST 05 OCT 1998 As per requests people have been making for the last few weeks, I've started a link collection page that archives all of the links mentioned in the Daily Static. Even though I mention occasionally purging the page, don't worry about never being able to find links again. When I purge, I'll archive, so you'll have some way to find old links again in case you don't bookmark a favourite site.
