| AND VOTE AGAIN 00:19 PST 21 FEB 1999 I've been having a little trouble with the polling script I was going to use, so WildOne- mounted a poll on his site (thanks, dude!). What I need to know is, what time should the site automatically update? Head on over and let me know what you think. I'll let the poll run until 3:00PM PST February 26th.

UP FOR A VOTE 00:01 PST 20 FEB 1999 Captured.com runs a weekly poll, and it looks like User Friendly is on the list. Check it out and cast your ballot! One thing that I noticed was that every strip that was on the list, with the exception of UF, is a major syndicated cartoon. I'm not sure if I should feel proud or very, very small. Thanks to Roger Boal across the water in England for pointinge this out! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZOID! 03:03 PST 19 FEB 1999 I'm glad I get to do this, because it's my website. ;-) He's been a great friend for nearly ten years, and I've watched him work hard to get to where he is: Zoid, the designer/coder behind the outrageously popular Quake mod Capture the Flag and id Software's portmaster, increments his chronological age value by one today. Dude, a shambler burger with mushrooms is on me. KICKSTARTING DUSTPUPPY.ORG 03:00 PST 19 FEB 1999 Ritalin-Boy has requested some help from UFies everywhere for ideas on content to be served up at dustpuppy.org: Needo and I and a few other Ufies are wracking our brains trying to invent content for dustpuppy.org. And thus, we put a call out to UFies everywhere to submit their whackass ideas. ANYTHING GOES! Got a lightbulb above yer head? Send the glow to ideas@dustpuppy.org. LIVE AT THE PLAYDIUM 02:58 PST 19 FEB 1999 Here's an announcement from Mimick pertaining to a bit of a UFie get-together in Vancouver: To all ufies in Vancouver, BC: Latheos and Blackvelvet will be at Playdium at 9 pm in the lounge. Everyone is welcome. Let's take over the place and paint it Plaid! ;)

I KNEW HER WHEN... 00:03 PST 18 FEB 1999 Continuing in the tradition of UF being a Geek social site, I'd like to publicly congratulate UF's very own Linkbrarian Ciannait on her successful hire at the luminescent offices of Silicon Graphics. So Ciannait, do you get discounts on hardware? :) STEVE HARRIS GETS TWO THUMBS UP 00:01 PST 18 FEB 1999 It wasn't long ago when I asked if anyone had a video card that worked with BeOS that they'd be willing to let go for cheap. Well, a chap living in Britain by the name of Steve Harris not only had the card (a Matrox Millenium II), he gifted it unto me, shipping and all. Steve, thank you for your generosity and your promptness! Points in Heaven for you.

I SENSE A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE 00:01 PST 17 FEB 1999 I got sent this link to the Refund Day reports, including further links on that page to stories in various publications including the San Jose Mercury News. What's interesting is that ubergeek Eric S. Raymond showed up dressed as Obi-wan Kenobi. To answer the many questions I received pertaining to this, yes indeed, Eric does read User Friendly! Thanks to Wayne T. Rambo and David Jelinek for making this info known to me.

UPDATE MAGIC 00:13 PST 16 FEB 1999 Now that Peer 2 Peer has been launched, I can harass Arcterex into helping me work on the automatic update scripts so you can plan on seeing the strip up at the same time every day. Anyone have a preference beyond midnight PST? No, I will not consider more than one update a day. :) CARTOONIST SUPPORT 00:11 PST 16 FEB 1999 Thanks to everyone who wrote in regarding the bloke who flamed me out of the blue for not having a compressed archive of the strips for him to download (see [ARCHIVED NEWS]). A good example of the letters that came in is one from Uri Guttman: About that crank who wanted the entire archive on one page. Tell him to write a simple perl script to fetch the archive page and then fetch each comic page. I will do it for him for a fee (if he has to ask, he can't afford me. Besides, his being a jerk ups my price!). Heh. Anyway, this is behind me, although I'm still puzzled over the guy's attitude. Hmmmm. Maybe there's a cartoon strip in there somewhere...

CMDRTACO DOES IT AGAIN 00:04 PST 15 FEB 1999 This is too cool. The Peer 2 Peer launch was mentioned on Slashdot yesterday, bringing Arcterex's server into a screaming death spiral as the infamous "Slashdot Effect" sent thousands and thousands of clicks over to the wee box. Arc wants you all to know that it's fixed now. :) SOMEONE HAS THEIR HEAD UP THEIR BUTT 00:02 PST 15 FEB 1999 You know, I get all kinds. I don't mind criticism (as long as it's constructive), I respect everyone's right to an opinion, I understand biases, and I know that humour is a fickle thing. I also try very hard to accommodate people when they ask for something to be done on the site in the name of improvements. But when someone writes in, mad as hell at me because I've inconvenienced him by not providing all of the archives as a single downloadable file, when he wants it, the way he wants it, I get my hackles up. Dude, go read someone else's comic and give them a hard time. No wait, better yet, go have a headbutting contest with a steel girder. Some people. Sheesh. THANKS PLANETCLICK 00:01 PST 15 FEB 1999 Looks like we got a bit of attention over at PlanetClick; at least, we got enough favourable ratings from UFies to earn the comic an award for "Funniest Site." So, thanks PlanetClick and thanks to those who voted for us!
