THE FIRST USER FRIENDLY MEET A SUCCESS
21:50 PST 15 NOV 1998
Twenty-five or so people showed up for a Quake 2 tournament and just general schmoozing. The winners of the tourney were Warmonger, Phantom and Bjorn, in that order. The winner of the "bottom-feeders" round (a round for the eliminated players) was none other than Aaargh. Well done, guys. I might add that the top three players were neck and neck...the matches were very close.

My thanks to IOError for organizing the meet; sadly, he couldn't make it at the last minute due to a personal emergency. What an injustice -- he busted his ass to get this thing together. Thanks also to Mimick for helping out when IOError got waylaid. Also, one thousand thank-yous to Devon over at Bliink Interactive for coming in an running the tournament on her only day off during the week!

It was a real pleasure to meet so many of you out there. One special mention is for Susan Collicott, who drove up all the way from Seattle and brought us killer chocolate chip cookies! Add to that a deep-dish apple pie to die for (which had a dust puppy made out of dough on top of the crust) and we all owe her big time.

But that wasn't all. The final round of the tourney was interrupted by a huge flood! For those who don't live in Vancouver, we experienced a really violent and torrential thunderstorm this evening and water started to spill into the floor at Bliink. This could have been the very first Quake 2 Tourney to be rained out. :)

So, my thanks to everyone who showed and organized and helped make the evening a pleasure. The dinner was a nice touch to a grand evening. It's nice to know there are so many interesting people out there.

T-SHIRT ORDER CONFIRMATIONS
21:43 PST 13 NOV 1998
If you're one of the many who ordered a t-shirt in the last while, please note that you won't receive confirmation for a few days (Monday or Tuesday is likely, maybe Wednesday) as there's no one to post the transactions in the office until the beginning of next week. If you don't hear back by the end of next week, write me with the details and I'll look into it. Don't worry about making it in time for Christmas -- if your order went through, your t-shirts should be in the mail next week. Okay, worry a little. No telling what the various postal services will do.

ANNIVERSARY BASH UPDATE!
21:47 PST 12 NOV 1998
IOError, the courageous UFie who has taken on the task of organizing the meet for this Sunday (November 15th), has an update: There will be an extra box at Bliink for IRCing...so if you can't be there in person, you can meet us on the #userfriendly IRC channel on Undernet! Related to that is that we may get to meet ubergeek Eric S. Raymond on the channel, as he's expressed interest in being there. Sad that he's on the other side of the continent. IOError continues: Certainly when the tourney is over and possibly during, there will be a Quake 2 server on the pipe at Bliink that people who aren't at the bash can connect to, and join in the fragging . The server IP is: 209.52.38.215, use the default Q2 port.

T-SHIRT ORDER FORM IS UP!
22:33 PST 12 NOV 1998
Thank you for your patience! If you head on over to the Merchandise page, there's a link on the item list for the second t-shirt that will take you to the order form. PLEASE NOTE: if you want to get a t-shirt in time for Christmas, order now. It increases your chances of actually getting one through the soon-to-be overloaded postal services. If you have any product enquiries, please send them to Josette.

SCRIPTUM VERITAS
22:03 PST 12 NOV 1998
In a fit of coding madness, Erik Fortin whipped this perl script together and sent it to me. So sayeth he: I was reading the faq the other day and got a bit annoyed that the static page had the little picture and there was no was to link statically to the larger picture. I decided that i needed to do a little writing of some code... and thus was born a cgi. Click on the link and there you'll have it. Most cool. Thanks Erik.

MORE FROM THE BATCH FILE
22:12 PST 11 NOV 1998
Just a few things: We have more honourable mentions in the Fan Art section, and a new addition to the Neat-o Files page, a nifty UF cast program written by Daniel. Lastly, if you're planning on going to the UFie meet in Vancouver on the 15th (see the top of this page), drop a line to UF-Junkie and he'll do a tally. I understand there are folks taking the time out all the way from Oregon and Washington states. Awesome.

SURVEY ENTRY WINNERS
22:09 PST 11 NOV 1998
Congratulations to Nicole Davaris, Tom K. Younger and Eli Yatzke! Your names were drawn from the several thousand that were entered. Nicole also gets the illustration of herself. The three of you need to write me with your mailing addresses and the size of t-shirt (all I have left are XL and XXL) you want. Nicole, you need to send me a picture so I can do up your illustration. Thanks to everyone who entered, and keep your eyes on the Static for news of the next contest!

I'M GUESSING AROUND NOON ON THE 12TH
22:08 PST 11 NOV 1998
I need to do a couple of things with mail redirection, but once that's done, I'll make the t-shirt order form go live. Really. :-)

FROM THE BATCH FILE
21:20 PST 10 NOV 1998
I'm going to keep this short because it's coming up to Remembrance Day. I'm holding off on posting the t-shirt order form until tomorrow midnight. No news on the book front, but that's par for the course -- it's a game of waiting as publishers try to juggle their schedules, and things still look positive. I'll be looking for more help for the site soon, so if you want to be one of the proud, the few and the poor, keep your eye on the news page. :) One last thing: thank you to everyone for writing in about You Never Knew Me, and extra thanks to those who passed it around. It helps to know that I've been able to touch a few people with that humble poem.

T-SHIRTS? YOU BETCHA
20:02 PST 09 NOV 1998
To answer a few common questions: Yes, the second line of t-shirts will be available very soon. Yes, we even ship internationally. No, the first line of t-shirts will never be available again. Yes, we take credit cards over the web, or you can send us a money order. We'll even do cash if you're local, but you need to set that up beforehand.
