[Illiad] JULY 2005 BACKFEED v1.0Date:Thu Jun 30 08:55:05 2005

ONE LAZY JULY: I confess I cheated a little when I put this month's UF desktop calendar together. It's...simple. :) Nonetheless, if you're a Nethack fan, you'll understand simplicity is often the best. Sunday-first version and Monday-first version. Enjoy!

GEEKDAY + NETDAY + CARD DAY!: Intrepid UFie Shaun Torres seems to have rather enjoyed both Geekday and Netday, two of the Sunday game cartoons. He offers up an expansion to both, using cards:

[I]t's a set of game-cards that I created [Excel File, 167kb] that are designed to go along with the game. You just print off the cards (preferably on cardstock, although paper works fine too), cut them up, and use them along with the board game. Their are only six new rules:

  1. Each player starts with 10 Sanity and 10 Popularity instead of five.
  2. Each player draws five cards at the beginning of the game.
  3. There are two types of cards: Plots and schemes. Plots may be played only on your turn, after you draw. Schemes may be played at any time.
  4. You may not play any cards that affect another player while you are in bed.
  5. On your turn you first roll the dice and move (or not, if you are still in bed). You then draw enough cards so that you have five. If you already have five or more, do not draw. You may then play any plots that you wish to play.
  6. If any player goes postal, all other players get a +2 bonus to their sanity (for having finally gotten rid of an annoying co-worker). If any player is fired, all other players get a +2 bonus to their popularity (they look better by comparison).

It's really designed for four or more players, but it can work with two. It just might be a very short game. I've done some playtesting already, and it really adds a whole new level of play to the game.

I have yet to give the cards a try but a cursory examination suggests some pretty fun gameplay. Well done, and thanks Shaun!

CONTRACT CODE: Just a heads-up: I'm involved in a game development project that will kick off in September, which means I'll be recruiting contractors in August. I'll be looking for flash experts, graphic artists, database experts, coders who can sling mod_perl and tiny gnomes with a knack for fixing rusty machinery. I'll be posting the recruitment notices in about a month's time, so if you or someone you know would like some extra work (and $) on the side, you'll know where to look.
