| USER FRIENDLY IN DEUTSCH! | Date:Sun Oct 3 23:08:10 1999 |
| Head on over to Benutzer Freundlich! Heike and Winy are UFies in Germany who have started translating the strips from the beginning of the archives, one per day. It takes a particular skill to translate nuances of the geek culture. For example, how do you translate 555-BABY? or "Where do you want to go today?" or "Damn, I'm out of rockets!" ;-) I'm sure that the 15,000 people from Germany who are now reading UF on a regular basis will soon let us know if this translation is a good one. If anyone wants to send comments to Heike and Winy they can contact them at telma@online.de

| TUESDAY IS NATIONAL TECHIE DAY | Date:Sun Oct 3 23:02:05 1999 |
| We are writing to you on behalf of the Admin. Staff of IXC Communications in Louisville, Ky. As you know, next Tuesday is National Techies Day. We have several activities planned to honor our Technical Staff (our Geek friends) 8-) We are wondering how UF is planning to celebrate. We have many UFies on our staff here, who we know would enjoy including UF in the activities of the day. We would be grateful for any ideas or suggestions that you might have to help us make our National Techies Day celebration one to remember!! - Glenda Gray, Receptionist; Kristie Maulin, Administrative Asst. Good question! My suggestions: install Windows 98 on all of their workstations, and Windows NT on any Linux or BSD servers in the office. They'll love you for it. ;) Seriously though, treat your techs with tender loving care. Pizza, Jolt Cola, piles and piles of junk food and cool techie books and videos will brighten any tech's day. Let them play Rainbow Six or Quake or Team Fortress on the office network, and see if you can't get Neal Stephenson or someone else cool like that to drop by and chat with them. They'll love you forever. Nice to see techies being appreciated. I commend the both of you for having the heart to care!

| PERSONAL BOOKSHELF KAPUT | Date:Sun Oct 3 22:59:34 1999 |
| This was sent in by DigDug: Personal Bookshelf (http://www.pbs.mcp.com/) will be shutting down on October 11th, and will be replaced by "MyInformIT" (http://www.informit.com/) I have checked the books at that site (http://www.informit.com/itlibrary/), and it has not nearly as many books as PBS. In fact, the only two operating systems - Win95 and Win98. Hmmm. One can only hope that the library will develop quickly.

| FAQ: IS THERE A MONTHLY FILE OF UF? | Date:Sat Oct 2 23:09:43 1999 |
I get asked this quite a bit, so I'll answer this here in hopes that it'll thin out the mail a little. Question: Is there a tar/zip/rar of the UF cartoon strips available? Answer: No. Question: Why not? Answer: Because my sponsors wouldn't take too kindly to it. With all of the bandwidth used, hardware required, staff that need to get paid (and they're paid poorly), producing and running UF does cost real money, so keeping my sponsors at least reasonably happy is in everyone's best interest! :)

| UFIE GATHERING AT TEXAS REN FAIR | Date:Thu Sep 30 20:24:45 1999 |
sn0wcrash has taken the time to organize a get-together nexus for UFies who are attending the Texas Renaissance Fair. Head on over to his site for info if you'd like to mob together with the rest of the worthies. :)

| I wish to congratulate our very own WebDiva D and Yohimbe on their engagement yesterday! Yup! They are getting married! For those of you who don't know, WebDiva D and Yohimbe do a ton of hardwork on this site. Seeing that daily you have your dose of what it is you love the most. Together they make a wonderful team, and now, they are making their team official. These two are wonderful people, the cats big Meow in my books and I look forward to a continued and long friendship with these two, and to take from them fine example of how a solid relationship should work!

| The Ebay Auction ended Monday September 27th at noon. By the second day, the auction was deemed "hot" by Ebay. The final bid (of 38 total bids) was for $510.00. Thanks to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the winner, mrzebra2000 of Vancouver, BC. Meanwhile on Amazon.com, the book reached #8 ranking over Friday/Saturday! It has since settled back to a comfy #78. Many thanks, again, to everyone who has pre-ordered. UFies rock!

| ANOTHER REASON WHY VANCOUVER ROCKS | Date:Mon Sep 27 17:28:27 1999 |
| This in from Babboo: The Fraser Valley Llama and Alpaca Club will host a walk and picnic Oct. 3 at Fort Langley Municipal Park. The Llama walk starts from the crossing at Glover and St. Andrews Street and goes along Frances, Royal, Mavis and Church Street ending at the park. The event goes from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This has nothing to do with the UFie community, other than some evidently naughty rumours.

| [KETHRYVIS]A HEART FILLED WITH SADNESS | Date:Mon Sep 27 11:02:06 1999 |
| Marion Zimmer Bradley suffered a major heart attack Tuesday, Sept. 21 which lead to her passing on Saturday night. She was a fabulous writer, not only with the Mists of Avalon and following books, but with her Darkover series, and as the patron for many of the genre's top writers, including Diana Paxson and Mercedes Lackey (a writer close to my heart). UFie SCAdians should note that MZB was a founder of the SCA and named the organization on the spot when the group needed an actual name to reserve a site for an early event. She will be sorely sorely missed by readers, SCAdians, and her many many fans. More information on the funeral arrangements. I am filled with grief and longing. My tribute to her is to enjoy her writings and appreciate a great great talent.

| INTO THE QUIET: MARION ZIMMER BRADLEY | Date:Mon Sep 27 11:01:54 1999 |
| It is with deep sorrow that I must relay the passing away of Ms. Bradley. It appears the news item mentioning her heart attack was a bit late in coming, as Ms. Bradley had passed away on Saturday. This is according to her official site at http://www.mzbfm.com/news.htm. Her talents as a writer and magician of the imagination will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Ms. Bradley.
