[Illiad] A UFIE WRITES FROM THE PENTAGONDate:Wed Sep 12 10:07:54 2001

This in from a UF community member who works for the U.S. Air Force in the Pentagon:

I am back in to work for another 12 hour plus shift. I say "12 hour plus," because I just got home at 0100 this morning, 18.5 hours after I left home for what would should have been a routine day in the 5 sided building. The first thing I did when I got home was to hug my wife. I then called a friend and then went upstairs and pulled each of my daughters (2.5 yr and 3 months) out of bed and hugged them. I hope they will never see anything like this again, I doubt it... I then tried to get some sleep. Let's just say for the duration, I am going to have to acquire a taste for coffee...

Our office is on the other side of the Pentagon, on a below ground floor. We saw the Trade Tower strikes on TV. We did not know the building was hit until the news announced it. We stayed in the building for another hour and would have stayed longer, but they decided to evacuate us to another location. We are already back in the building this morning. One of our responsibilities is to work with the casualty lists. I am not looking forward to that.

Thank you for caring.

That the worldwide UF community as a whole has pulled together over yesterday's soul-shattering events is both heartening and eye-opening. Compassion over anger has ruled the day.

If you can, please say a prayer or light a candle tonight for the many, many victims.

[Iambe] THEY'LL HAVE A PINT OR TWO :)Date:Tue Sep 11 09:54:10 2001
I am to understand that blood is desperately needed at this time, and more than likely over the course of the next few days. Please, if you are able - go to your local Red Cross or Blood Services and part with a pint. No matter where you are, surplus blood can be shipped to help those in need.

Peace be with us all.

[Kickstart] OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO THOSE AFFECTEDDate:Tue Sep 11 08:18:05 2001
Based on the horrific news this morning of what appear to be terrorist attacks on the World Trade towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC, we at UF wish to give our sympathy to those affected by these actions and our best wishes for friends and family. Let us all hope that the initial numbers of the injured and killed is grossly exaggerated.

ALERT: Canadian "DMCA" in the Works - Short Deadline

Tell Canada to Reject Anti-Technology Bans(Issued: September 7, 2001 / Deadline: September 15, 2001)

Introduction:

Canadian citizens, and others, are urged to contact the Canadian government and express their opposition to legislation, similar to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in the U.S., that would outlaw circumvention of technological restrictions put in place by copyright holders. The Canadian government is accepting public comment until September 15, 2001 on its proposed "Consultation Paper on Digital Copyright Issues" which considers such measures.
