| BOOK AVAILABILITY AT ALS & ATLANTA ISP QUERY | Date:Sun Oct 10 17:24:27 1999 |
| A few people have asked this, so to cover all bases I'll answer the question here. There are indeed going to be User Friendly books for sale at the Atlanta Linux Showcase, at both the UF booth and the O'Reilly booth. I heard that there may be a show discount, so take advantage of it while you can. Also, are there any Atlanta UFies who are going to ALS that also work for a local ISP? If so, please write me. I have a favour to ask.

| [IAMBE]TEAM DUST PUPPY PREPARES FOR ALS | Date:Sun Oct 10 11:47:33 1999 |
| Well Folx, The Team is getting ready to swarm (what else would you call a gaggle of Geeks wired on caffeine) down on Atlanta at the Cobb Galleria for the Atlanta Linux Showcase. It is our intention to stand proud and preach the Dust Puppy (can I have a Go Little Guy?). While there Team Dust Puppy members Isaac, Gruuk, Amberle, Thyla, sad|st and myself plan to meet as many of you as possible for some good old fashioned MS-Slamming, Coke and otherwise(if you are a chess player, make certain to challenge Gruuk). Stop by the UF Booth as we will not only be handing out show-exclusive User Friendly buttons (flaunt these in front of your poor (plebe) co-workers who had to hold down the fort while you got to go and party), but also have T-Shirts and Ballcaps and User Friendly books (we are so proud of you Illiad!) to sell if you are the kind of instant-gratification(like I am not >;) Geek who needs your Geek-Gear NOW. Drop me a line if you are planning on attending to the usual address. See you at the show.

| NO SPOILER REVIEW: AMERICAN BEAUTY | Date:Sat Oct 9 00:04:21 1999 |
| I went into this movie thinking it was going to be a sort of dark comedy. What this movie really is, in fact, is a very clear and shocking look at social dysfunction in modern day America. And it's not just something that applies to what people normally label "dysfunctional." At least some of the elements of what is dealt with in the movie applies to all of us to one degree or another, whether metaphorically or in actuality. The lessons are conveyed to us visually, overtly and with a clear subtext. In short, it's a tightly woven movie with one hell of a message. I was sold on the movie by its lead actor, Kevin Spacey. I've always enjoyed his work, and although he's not as obvious a character actor as, say, Liam Neeson, Spacey possesses his own deep charisma, and a voice so well modulated he carries himself with every word he utters. Annette Bening is a good actress, and plays counter to Spacey's role. Cast chemistry is overall quite good; nothing falls flat while the performers are exchanging words and looks. There's even a tiny role for Scott Bakula, the chyk-magnet from Quantum Leap. Given his history for taking lady-killer roles, it's rather cool to see him playing a gay man. One of the principal sub-plots that winds its way through the film is that of Ricky (played by Wes Bentley), a young man with a very clear picture of who he is, and one with a penchant for video taping everything, his way of journaling life. Perhaps the most interesting aspects of his personality surface when he is asked "What is the most beautiful thing you've ever filmed?" The direction was crisp, the writing was tight and the camerawork was solid. I do recommend this movie to anyone who wants something that's both a little thought- and spirit-provoking. I also recommend this movie to anyone who just wants to see a strong example of telling a story with a message. Three and half stars outta four. Go see it.

| FAQ: DP + ERWIN GOLF SHIRT DETAIL | Date:Wed Oct 6 00:38:27 1999 |
Okay, in case it isn't clear to some folks (and evidently it wasn't, judging from the email :)), the artwork on the golf shirt is embroidered with a high-stitch density. See, now you have something "nice" to wear to those boardroom meetings where a t-shirt simply will NOT do.
