A LINK THAT PERTAINS TO THE STRIPDate:Sun Oct 24 02:13:35 1999
I think everyone knows how influenced I am by Nerf(tm) weapons, and I've included their 'Snurf' counterparts in the strip many a time. Well, thanks to Steven Cochran I now know about Nerf Blast Arena. Details:

You have to check this out! Hasbro has made Nerf Blast Arena! The demo went up last night, and I was *finally* able to get through and d/l it. Of course its Win9.x only, but that's the only thing that OS is good for anyway, is playing games ;-)

Here is the link (and yes, it has multiplay!)

So download it and geek out already. This one could be fuuuuunnn :)

[IAMBE]PREACHING THE PENGUINDate:Fri Oct 22 13:44:34 1999
I am so very pleased to announce that our very own zealous UFie and TimeCity Founder Emmett "Delorean" Plant has been made the new editor of Linux Today.

I have no idea what Linux Today was thinking when they chose Emmett for the editorial cap (OK he is brilliant and competent), but I wish them and Emmett well. Emmett - You Rock! Please take a couple hours out of your day in order to drop him a line telling him in no uncertain terms how Linux Today should be run :)

FUND RAISING FOR THE 'OTHER' ALSDate:Thu Oct 21 23:32:55 1999
This in from Deech:

Hi, my name is David Mestel.(aka: Deech) I have been organizing a little get-together in St. Louis, MO and was wondering if you could please help us out. I represent a little organization called CharityLan. We organize Lan Parties and all the proceeds go to charity.

This is the first one and we *really* want it to be a success. All the proceeds are going to A.L.S, (no... not *that* ALS!)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disorder, characterized by progressive degeneration of motor cells in the spinal cord and brain.

When the motor neuron cell can no longer send the impulses to the muscles there is increased muscle weakness, especially in the arms and legs, speech, swallowing, breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages they require to function, they begin to atrophy (waste away). ALS is very often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease." Neither its cause or cure is known.

What we do is this: There is much money devoted to reasearch for a cure for this disease, we seek to help aleviate the mental trauma of the disease. The money raised is used to purchase laptops and desktops with special hardware and software to allow the victims (who have lost the ability to move or speak) to communicate to their friends and loved ones via an interface that tracks the eye movements like a mouse tracks hand movements.

Please take a moment to look and see what we are about, we really are just small time stuff attempting to do some good for the community and have some fun blowing each other up to itty bitty steaming chunks of burning flesh.

By the way, I know what pointing UFies at a site does, so if you do post the link on the news page, ask that only folks that are actually in the vicinity of St. Louis, MO, USA click through. My employer, who is so kind as to give me the space to post the page on, might be a little peeved if I bring the server to it's knees... :)

The site is located at http://deech.betterbox.net/charitylan

COULD BE INTERESTINGDate:Thu Oct 21 23:30:15 1999
This in from kudzu.sr:

http://www.msnbc.com/modules/surveys/nuttynet.asp

MSNBC has a poll for favorite websites. It's not the same kind as the Man of the Year. It would be interesting to see where UF ends up, if all the Ufies were told that it was there. This is not a suggestion to hammer the site, but just add their vote.

Indeed, no site hammering! Last time the community did that you guys took down one of the Time/Warner machines several times. Use your powers only for good... :)

[Iambe]STICKLERS FOR PUNISHMENTDate:Thu Oct 21 10:01:44 1999
Just putting out the call that local (Greater Van/WA State) UFies are invited to attend a night of pool (8-ball, 9-ball, cutthroat), beer and fun Friday night at Blondie's Billiards in Abbotsford. We are hoping to get together about 8:30'ish (or so). If you are up to having IamBro kick your butt, or you can give him competition enough to make him cry like a little girl come on out. If you would simply like to learn how to play or hang out come on along and write me at the usual addy for further details or directions. I will be reserving two 9 footers, but please RSVP to let me know if I need to reserve another one due to high attendance. Bring your cue (although the house cues are decent if you don't have one), a smile and 10 bux for table time.

UFIE GATHERING AT PLANETFEST 99, PASADENA, CALIFORNIADate:Wed Oct 20 16:39:45 1999
This in from LthrOttr: I'm trying to arrange a UFie get together at PlanetFest 99 in Pasadena, CA, Dec 3-5, 1999. (http://planetfest.org/). It is sponsored by the Planetary Society (one of the SETI@Home sponsors). As part of the event, on Dec 3, when the Mars Polar Lander lands, it will broadcast back sounds from Mars, that will be heard. For the first time, the sounds from another world. The mic was sponsored by the Planetary Society.

Right now, I'm trying to get an idea of the number of UFies interested, so I can see about getting something organized and possibly shirts (when I get the image from Illiad). Other questions, just give me an e-mail.

Sounds like a great time, so drop LthrOttr a note if you can go!

DOG HOME HUNTINGDate:Wed Oct 20 16:33:54 1999
I've never done this before, and I'll probably never do this again, but I felt it was worth a shot.

YORKIE, reg. PB n/male, 7lbs, 1.5 yrs, playful, obedient, active, sweet, not yappy. Loves retrieving, walks, other pets, everybody! Uses newspaper or outdoors. Good dog for adults or gentle kids. Kennel, toys, sweaters, etc. CAD$550.00

This sweet little guy needs a home, and I'm helping him find one. He'd make a great geek pet. Obviously if you're in Vancouver or nearby you can come see him easily enough. You can contact the people he currently owns at Louie@LookingGlass.mlnet.com

BUILDING AN APP IN A DAYDate:Wed Oct 20 16:31:20 1999
In from Vic Metcalfe: I'm coordinating a project to build a linux application in a day at the Network World ~ Live! show next week. The idea is to write the Linux application in just one day, while people watch our progress at the booth. I'm looking for all kinds of people, which is why I'd really like to put the word out the the eclectic readership of User Friendly! Participants will be working from all over the word on the project. It should be a lot of fun and give us a chance to show off what we can do with our favorite operating system!

The project's site is at http://linux.networkworldlive.com/, and the main show site is at http://www.networkworldlive.com/.

'HOW TO MAKE AN ATLANTA DUST PUPPY' BY STARLADYDate:Mon Oct 18 00:29:14 1999
Starlady and her partner in crime Wondergeek Heather made a bunch of Dust Puppy critters out of some yarn and dropped them off at the booth in Atlanta. A whole slew of people wanted one or more, but they weren't for sale. Rather than make money off of them, Starlady has been kind enough to put up a page documenting how to make these little fellas yourself. Thanks Jessica! :)
