[Illiad] YOUR OPINION IS REQUESTED ON GATHERING YOUR OPINIONDate:Tue Jun 5 21:25:56 2001
We've been approached recently by research companies who very much want to tap the highly regarded opinions of UF's audience (read: you). This translates into a proposal to run surveys for these companies on the site; it also comes with two basic restrictions that we'll insist on, namely:

  1. A limited number of surveys a year. We don't want this to be intrusive to you.
  2. Our privacy policy will take precedence. No one's name, e-mail address, or whatever will be sold, passed on, or abused. Period.

Also, the surveys will likely be delivered as a news item, and less than 1% of the audience will even see them. It's possible over time that an individual viewer will see more than one in the same year, but generally speaking you more than likely won't see them at all. Participating in this will give all of you the chance to offer your input into IT trends. We'll also share the executive summaries of each survey. What it means for UF is a source of revenue that will help us sustain and build the company.

As usual, we're seeking your permission to do this. No tricks, no marketspeak. What do all of you think? Post a comment below, or if you want to comment privately, by all means send your comment to us here.

Thanks gang!

[Illiad] DUST PUPPY SIGHTING ON CODE GODDate:Tue Jun 5 21:22:15 2001

CatcherInTheRye kindly sent in this link to a photo of none other than John Carmack of id Software adorned with a Dust Puppy t-shirt. Not only is John a world-class coder and an authority (if not the authority) on 3D engine technology, he also obviously has impeccable taste in clothing. ;)

[Kickstart] DANGERS OF SUID SHELL SCRIPTS - FROM SYS ADMIN MAGAZINEDate:Tue Jun 5 11:25:30 2001
As most readers will have seen, Sys Admin Magazine has been kind enough to sponsor some of the features we provide on the UF site (most especially, the Link-Of-The-Day below). In cooperation, we will be linking to articles from their site and some of our other sponsors - specifically where the material is useful, relevant, and applicable to you, the reader.

After consideration, I think this will be of interest...it's well written and clear, about a subject that will be of concern for any sysadmin (on systems which allow SUID scripts). I recommend all system administrators take a look and prevent another of the many ways you can find yourself administrating a cracked box.
