| [Yohimbe] UPDATE ON THE UFIE COUNT | Date:Thu Jul 19 11:57:51 2001 |
Our estimate: One million Ufies. This is during our traditional summer slowdown, so we're pretty happy. The proxy count graphic did not work all that well, so we had to do some math and some statistics. Grep is now my personal beyatch. Barbie says "Statistics are Hard"... Heh.

| [Kickstart] UNIXREVIEW.COM BOOK REVIEW: SECURITY ENGINEERING | Date:Wed Jul 18 14:11:27 2001 |
| Full title: Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems by Ross J. Anderson Reviewed by: Ben Rothke Book Preview with sample chapter It's rare to have to review a review of a book, especially where you have only read the preview chapter of said book. It's rarer still to have that review and that sample chapter make me want to ask my superiors for the cash to buy the book. This did it for me. As far as the sample chapter goes, it's clear, concise and doesn't get into so much of treating the reader like he/she doesn't have a security clue in their Windows-addled head; as so many security books do. The review by Ben Rothke follows suit. In a precise fashion, he portrays the book as the overview of security that it needs to be (without delving into the application specific details) and explains how the book will help you rather than dumping knowledge into what is assumed to be the empty brain-hole of a newbie security administrator. Well done! I'm off to talk to Yohimbe about our book budget.

| [WebDiva D] GEEKFINDER SUCCESS AND NON-SUCCESS TIPS | Date:Wed Jul 18 11:56:59 2001 |
I am in shock. I'm shaking! I'm no spring chicken and consider myself an old school geek. My first computer course actually used punch cards! I have just received a call offering me (and of course I accepted!) a dream job. Read full story... Mark S. Congrats to you, Mark and thanks for sharing your story with us! If you have a Geekfinder Success Story E-mail it to me, please! Meanwhile, last Geekfinder news item showcased our first Featured Resume, or non-success. Since it was posted I have received several "Me too" emails. This one got me thinking: I've been looking at that brief unsuccess story of Grant, and I am actually in the same boat, 7 months now with no decent prospects. However I wanted to point out to others in this boat that are getting really frustrated, that it's not just us. A recent CNN.com article shows that 76% of the IT force that has been laid off in the past 6 months is still unemployed. Roger S. So where are the suggestions or tips to assist the job seeker? I have spent several hours researching the WWW and I haven't found much in the way of good *current* advice. The closest I came was a Fortune.com news article attachment on "How To Cope," but surely there is more out there! If you have found a good resource, be it online or otherwise, please share it with us by using the Comments feature or emailing it to me.

| [Illiad] SPATE OF THE BUNYAN | Date:Tue Jul 17 15:54:42 2001 |
It's been a while since I've done one of these, so I'll remedy that right now. The trip to LinuxTag was, like last year, terrific. There's no question that the organizers really understand both the business and community side of the equation. If any of you haven't been to a LinuxTag event yet and you plan on being in Germany next summer, I urge you to visit the show, even if just for a day. Book Three, The Root of All Evil, will be published by O'Reilly in the very near future. More details as they become available. If you read Tuesday's cartoon and had any doubt about how precious baby penguins can be, look here and erase those doubts forever. Finally, I'm catching up on my mail after returning from Europe and apologize if the delay has been longer than normal. You'd think there'd be a way to just think your replies and have them e-mailed for you by now.
