LEST WE FORGET: REMEMBRANCE DAYDate:Wed Nov 10 23:24:51 1999
I wrote this some time ago, and posted it last year for November 11. I received a few letters from folks who remembered it, and they asked me to post it again. Here it is:

You Never Knew Me

You never knew me
as you grew up on that farm
watched the clouds roll by
dreamed of life and love

You never knew me
when they stormed in
shards of dark metal
quivering as they cut

You never knew me
when you swore to fight
and kissed your last goodbye
to those who waved and cried

You never knew me
as you huddled in the grime
cold and so alone
wishing for the sun

You never knew me
baker that you were
carpenter or farmer
not a soldier born

You never knew me
but you cried out for freedom
and defied the coming dark
even as you fell

And as I kneel by your cross
I realize that I never knew you
but I know you did this for me
even though
you never knew me.

ANOTHER CALL FOR COMMUNITY ACTIONDate:Wed Nov 10 23:19:20 1999
Soumen Basu writes:

You have been recently championing the hunger site, and I was hoping you could help Indians in Orissa by sending the Ufie community to http://www.causeanaffect.org/ Orissa, a state on the coastal regions of India was devastated by a cyclone just a few days back. Several hundred are feared dead, and ten million are believed to be affected. Drinking water, power, transport, communication, all sectors have been deeply affected, and as of yet, an estimate of the total damage is still underway. Railway tracks were torn up, and entire areas flooded. Currently the area is suffering from gastro-entritis, and this common and curable malady is killing dozens of people daily, for lack of proper help. Fortunately, a company (Iridium Interactive) has put up a site akin to the hunger site, where sponsor companies each provide 1/4 of a food packet per vote per day. There are currently 12 sponsors, so the two minutes it takes you to go to the site and click the button feeds 3 people. Please encourage the UFies out there to show their presence, and help these people in need.

It's certainly the day for it. I have the site bookmarked now and will be returning daily. I urge everyone else to do the same. Two minutes? It's priceless to someone in trouble.

DCYPHER CONTESTDate:Wed Nov 10 23:11:48 1999
This in from Justin Fairfax:

I just read at Slashdot.org about a new Distributed client brute force decryption group similar to RC5 bovine. I took the liberty of creating a team in the name of User Friendly...to join the team you can just head to

http://dcypher.net

and download the client. Change your team to team number 36 and boom you are on "Team UFie." This particular distributed client program just started yesterday November 9th.

Anyone care to give it a try? Thanks to Justin for setting this up thus far.

NETWORK OUTAGE LAST NIGHTDate:Wed Nov 10 02:09:50 1999
Apparently there was a bit of a network outage last night at our Telco. Neither userfriendly.org nor ufies.org were reachable, and investgative traceroutes died somewhere in the midst of Telus where we get our connectivity. The outage lasted for about a couple of hours, so if you were having difficulties getting here between 2130 to 2330, that's why. No gremlins in your machine caused it, and it's not something you can blame Windows for. :)

UF AT THE BAZAAR: DECEMBER 14-16 NEW YORK CITYDate:Mon Nov 8 22:57:26 1999
It looks close enough to be official: User Friendly will have a booth at The Bazaar in New York City. If you happen to be/live in NYC that week, have one or more of those days off, and would like to help out with the booth, drop us a line and let us know. As per usual we'll take care of your food tab, etc. Y'all just have to get your butt down there. :)

n9volt's new progeny can be seen here making a comment about one of the characters in the cartoon strip. Brings tears to my eyes...I had no idea kids can poke so much FUN. :)
