| COLUMNS TO MOVE 00:06 PST 16 JAN 1999 Be advised: the Monday issue of the Static will see Iambe's column moved over to her own section. Highlights and links to the column will still be featured on this page, but popular demand has caused the articles to grow to critical mass. Way to go Iambe. :-) YUMMIES DOWN UNDER 00:05 PST 16 JAN 1999 My undying gratitude to Sillz (who's doing the I&I column today -- see below) for sending me a jar of Vegemite and a packet of Tim Tams. Got 'em today. Love them both! It's been a while since I've been back to Orstrylia. And regardless of what others may say, Vegemite rocks. :-b THANKS! BUT... 00:03 PST 16 JAN 1999 Many thanks to all who wrote in to congratulate me on the deal with the National Post. It's very encouraging to know there's so much support out there for this little cartoon I draw. But...to get the terms straight: User Friendly is not actually syndicated. Syndication means signing a contract with a syndicate, who goes out to hundreds of papers and markets your strip with a whack of others. What happened here is still very cool and rare: a newspaper (a national one at that) picked up the cartoon without going through a syndicate. This is rare because it means more work for the newspaper folks, and less security. Two thumbs up one more time for Mr. LaPointe (Executive Editor of the National Post) for his willingness to believe in User Friendly.

| RECOVERY PERIOD EXTENDED 00:41 PST 15 JAN 1999 Well I thought I was going to get some sleep finally. It didn't really turn out that way, although I did get a couple of hours. So...I'll be a little slower than normal (I know, I know) replying to e-mail. Please bear with me for a few days until I get my head on straight after some decent sleep.

BOY, WERE THOSE LIGHTS EVER BRIGHT 13:06 PST 14 JAN 1999 I stayed up all night, cartooned until 4:00AM, drove to the CBC Studios in Vancouver and did a television interview with CBC Morning airing out of Halifax courtesy of a sattelite link. Anyone who saw the interview probably noticed I looked a little sleepy. That was until after the interview when I realized that I was on national television and not a local show. I was wide awake for a while after that. :-O The gadgets in the studio looked cool, but those lights they shone on me must have been old World War II search lights they were so bright...I was expecting flak to go off nearby me at any minute. After being up for 32+ hours, I'm going to bed. USER FRIENDLY IN THE LINUX JOURNAL 01:42 PST 14 JAN 1999 Yes indeed, User Friendly appears in the Linux Journal monthly now, starting with the February issue which ships today. Grab a copy, it's a spiff magazine! MINOR CHANGES TO THE SITE 12:06 PST 14 JAN 1999 Pretty soon we'll be moving Iambe's hip and popular column to her own section, with a summary on the Static complete with links. Iambe's been doing a great job and has earned a spot on the User Friendly site of her very own. Hat's off to you, hon! THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT IS RUN BY IDIOTS 12:01 PST 14 JAN 1999 As a Canadian I can speak on this with some authority. One really dumb ass thing they've been up to recently is this media levy everyone is talking about: If you disagree with the levy on blank media, which affects all of us negatively (unless of course you're an established artist or a record company...) please take the time to go on-line with your opinion by filling in the short form at: http://www.sycorp.com/petition.htm. Since I use blank CDs to archive the hi-res files for UF, et. al., you'd be doing me and people like me a favour by filling in the petition. Let's swamp the government. :-D

DUST PUPPY INSIDE REDUX 12:03 PST 13 JAN 1999 Michael Burden wrote in saying: Can you replace the "Dust Puppy Inside" that I sent earlier with this one? One of the net.lawyers saw my first one and pointed out to me that the (R) wasn't a good idea, and that (TM) would be better.... Consider it done, Michael, and thanks for the new file. MORE STORYLINE TAGS 12:05 PST 13 JAN 1999 Thanks to the efforts of JC Dill, I've added a handful of links pointing to some more of the storylines on the Reading Guide page in the Cartoons section. The idea is to list all of the storylines eventually. When I get to it. :-D Thanks JC!

| DUST PUPPY INSIDE 12:37 PST 12 JAN 1999 More brilliant ideas from the UFie community: two new ideas for the 'Dust Puppy Inside' logo. The first one is by Lai Fon-Lin; the second one is by Michael W. Burden Kudos to both of them. Have a look and enjoy! NATIONAL POST ARTICLE 12:03 PST 12 JAN 1999 Just in case anyone didn't actually see the article, you can get to it online. COAST TO COAST IN CANADA 12:01 PST 12 JAN 1999 I know you probably missed it (not that I mind :-)), but I had the pleasure of an interview on CBC Radio's Afternoon Show with Kathryn Gretsinger at around 4:00PM yesterday afternoon. That's the second interview I've had with her -- the first one was in September I think. She is so easy to talk to; she nearly made me forget I was on the air all over the Lower Mainland. :-O The next interview coming up is on television: CBC Morning out of Halifax. I'll be on the phone of course. The interview is on Thursday and is live, from 6:30AM to 9:00AM Eastern.

YES WE WANT BACKTALK 12:56 PST 11 JAN 1999 Check out the bottom of Iambe's section. There's a link there that takes you to a Talkback page where you can voice your opinions and let us all know what you think of today's letters. The perl was written by our very own godling, Arcterex. He cautions that this is a beta, and is subject to explosive behaviour. :) GEEKSTUFF BLASTS OFF 12:51 PST 11 JAN 1999 I started off the Geekstuff section with one software review (Half-Life) and three short book reviews. Thanks to the efforts of the epiphanous Tricia, our Geekstuff Editor, we now have a new submission in the Software section written by Nick Bilokonsky. Geekstuff is really open for business now, so head on over and read the reviewer's guidelines and submit your manuscripts to Tricia. Please be patient with us -- as the Geekstuff section grows, we'll be putting the Web equivalent of scaffolding all over it. THE SUNDAY CARTOON SWITCHEROO 12:22 PST 11 JAN 1999 For those who saw the Sunday cartoon in it's original form, the phrase "Even though we're funded by them" did indeed exist for about 8 hours. Some delving (and helpful mail) proved that the comment is inaccurate -- Apple has a contingency fund in the $1 Billion range. There's only one thing I hate more than changing a cartoon: suffering an inaccurate one to live. This sort of thing won't likely happen again -- I've allocated some hours every week to double fact-check everything. USER FRIENDLY MAKES THE NATIONAL POST! 12:17 PST 11 JAN 1999 Be still my beating heart. It's a done deal. The National Post, one of Canada's two national newspapers, will be publishing User Friendly daily Monday to Saturday starting today. They'll start with the archives and run a 'best of' over a short period until they catch up to the current strips, when they'll run the latest strip every day. I've been made to understand that there'll be an article on the comic strip in the paper today too. If you're at Comdex, drop by the UF booth (once again, we're sharing the Buy and Sell Online booth) and pick up a free copy of the paper before we run out. My thanks to all of the UFies who helped make this possible, and special thanks to Kirk LaPointe, the Executive Editor of the Post for believing in the strip enough to run it.
