LATE UPDATES TO BE A THING OF THE PAST 03:57 PST 07 FEB 1999 Yes, I was late updating today because I wasn't at home. And I was nowhere near a net connection (can you believe it). Instead, I was chasing the chicken in Quake 2 with some buds, and damn was it fun. I hadn't played Q2 in months but I still spanked a few people, and got pasted in return. Anyway, I have high hopes that much of the updating will be automated this month at a regular time, so all I have to do is upload the gifs, text files and other content and you'll get your daily serving of UF regularly. That and some bran and you'll have an diet that will keep you well cleaned out. :)

| CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE 00:04 PST 06 FEB 1999 Oh woe is me, I am so ashamed. The great Link of the Day on Friday taking you to Troops! had been submitted at least four times in the past months by Michael "Badger" Bristow, and yet he never got credit for it. This doesn't lessen Scrubbo's contribution, but I really shoulda mentioned Mike. So I'll mention his name. Mike. Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike. That tip the scales back, Mike? :-) WILD UF THEME BUG FIX 00:03 PST 06 FEB 1999 This item was sent in by WildOne-: Major bug fix to the UF windows theme. Someone pointed out to me tuesday night that several paths were flubbed. I have fixed it and did 2 things; updated the zip file and uploaded just the theme, no need to DL the entire file again for a theme file fix. Thanks Wild. The theme and update can be had at http://www.perl2000.com/Webmaster/UserFriendly/ VIDEO OUTPUT 00:01 PST 06 FEB 1999 Many thanks to the dozens (!) of folks who wrote in offering up their video cards for dirt cheap (and in some cases, even cheaper). I have a card on the way that will do the trick just fine. I think it's safe to say that if I ever need something, like, I dunno, a dark green fully-loaded Hummer and a big log cabin on some acreage near a lake, I just need to ask you folks. :-) Thanks again everyone.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE COLON CHOICES EXPAND 00:23 PST 05 FEB 1999 It's been just pointed out to me that the STB Velocity is another card I could shoot for. So, anyone with one of those burning a hole in their desk, drop me a line. ;-) TO BE OR NOT TO BE COLON SEEING WOULD HELP 00:03 PST 05 FEB 1999 I'm in the process of getting BeOS up and running (and everything I've seen and read makes it one sweeeeeet OS to play with, especially for a multimedia freak like me), but my poor Intel i740 video card isn't supported by the OS just yet. Does anyone have a spare Matrox Millenium II kicking around they want to sell cheap or trade for? If you have one such, please write me and let me know what you'd like for it. Thanks! WILLYGATE COLON THE TRUTH REVEALED 00:01 PST 05 FEB 1999 If you saw the news item regarding Willy the Groundhog's death yesterday, by now you may know that the body shown as Willy was in fact a different groundhog. That ticks me off. Baaaaaaad publicists. They should've just told the truth, but I suspect that's against their natures. More details are available if you want them. Thanks to Byron Ray and Aaron Malone for the alert.

REST WELL WEE FELLA 00:06 PST 04 FEB 1999 Mike Pelletier sent this one in: This is the saddest day of my life. A hero, cultural icon, and the wisest (and most famous) groundhog to ever live, the great "Wiarton Willy" has passed away. It happened early Sunday. It was kept a secret until just today. His body is on display at the Wiarton Hotel. Sad news. :( If you ain't a Canuck, it probably won't mean much to you, but I felt it deserved a mention. THE UFDOT EFFECT 00:03 PST 04 FEB 1999 According to James Welsh and Mark Bloore, the Weekly World News Online went offline after the link to their Virus article was made the LOTD. Hunh. We don't have quite the same power as Slashdot, but it looks like we can still bring weakened servers to their wobbly knees. Cool. COOL SPONSORS UPDATE 00:01 PST 04 FEB 1999 Thanks to everyone who wrote in with suggestions regarding the 'coolest sponsors to partner with UF' issue. It looks like the list (as suggested by UFies) includes, in no particular order: SGI, Sun, Red Hat, VA Research, Sony, Coke, and Be. I wonder what kind of a product line you could get if all of the named companies worked together? A powerful graphics workstation running a media-oriented open source OS that played awesome games and kept you fed with caffeine and sugar. Yeehah. :-)

GEEKSTUFF UPDATE 00:06 PST 03 FEB 1999 Get on over to the Geekstuff section and see what new stuff Tricia, your friendly neighbourhood Geekstuff editor, has put together for you. Thanks Tricia! LINUX WORLD EXPO REDUX 00:04 PST 03 FEB 1999 As promised, here are the details regarding my visit to Linux World Expo. I'll be arriving on March 2, and staying until March 4. I'll probably be at the attendee party that takes place after Linus "Da Man" Torvalds finishes his keynote speech (which I'll be attending), and wandering the halls on the following days. If you want to definitely catch me, I'll be at the VAresearch booth on March 3 between 2:30PM and 4:30PM. Come on by for a chat, and to visit the VA guys. They're nice, they're smart, and they sell Linux boxes. What more do you want? SHADES OF BUG'S LIFE 00:01 PST 03 FEB 1999 If you haven't seen A Bug's Life yet, go see it. It's damn funny and sweet on the eyes. But to the point. The talented Steve Hajducko has produced what has got to be the Fan Art winner for February, and it's only the 3rd. :) Even if someone else wins the prize this month, Steve gets a t-shirt anyway. Check out his work, and let him know what you think! So. Anyone want to see User Friendly as a CG animated cartoon? :)

JUST FOR ALL YOU LAZY-ASSES 00:02 PST 02 FEB 1999 Changes have been made to DNS so that you can get to the site just by typing userfriendly.org without the www. Slashdot got it right again. :-) AND YOU THOUGHT MIR WAS BAD FOR ERWIN... 00:01 PST 02 FEB 1999 On CNN.Com an article about the LAN on the International Space Station reveals that they'll be running an NT server and Win95 clients. When that sucker goes up, Chicken Little may be vindicated.

WE HAVE A WINNER! 00:08 PST 01 FEB 1999 After a few months of me needing to get around to it, I'm pleased to present the winner of the Fan Art entries for the month of January 1999! The Crud Puppy Inside logo by Ed Thwaites wins it! Ed, y'all need to write me and send me your snail mail address and shirt size. Dust Puppy t-shirt comin' your way. THE PUPPIES ARE CREATED...ONCE AGAIN 00:06 PST 01 FEB 1999 The inestimable Mike Warfield (check out his awesome resume, the dude is pure techgeek) sent in the following photos of some awesome creations he made for his kids. There's one of the Dust Puppy and one of the Crud Puppy. Be advised: these images are 640x480 and may take a bit to download, especially after you lot start pounding his server. Message to Mike: Way to go, man. I'm impressed. :-) UF WINDOWS THEME V3.0 RELEASED 00:03 PST 01 FEB 1999 Thanks to the efforts of WildOne, the next version of his User Friendly Windows Theme is now available at the Perl2000 site. Get on over and download it. Back at the ranch, I'm busily working on a non-holiday wallpaper of the Dust Puppy and...well, you'll soon see. It'll be non-platform specific, so don't worry about it being a rudely unsizable bitmap. USER FRIENDLY & GEEK CULTURE SHAKE HANDS 00:01 PST 01 FEB 1999 Bruce over at Geek Culture just notified me that their new comics section is up, and User Friendly gets the honour of appearing there. "They're oldies but goodies!" sayeth Bruce. If you've never been over to geekculture.com, you ought to. If you have, go check out the new things they've been working on. Thanks guys!!
