UFIE BBS MENTIONED ON LINUXDEV.NET
00:05 PDT 25 JUL 1999
Our community seems to be getting a lot of notice recently at LinuxDev.Net, which is pretty cool. This time it's a mention of the UFie BBS in their news column. I'm not sure what the membership numbers are up to, but last I heard we were over 1000. Spiffy. :-)

IT'S BALLOT TIME REDUX
00:01 PDT 24 JUL 1999
The poll at LinuxDev.net for the 'favourite cartoon strip of Linux Developers' has User Friendly in first place with a whopping 74.1%, with the immortal Calvin & Hobbes in second place at around 13.9% (which accounts for 85% of the take). Thanks everyone -- and if you haven't voted, the poll is still running.

RETRO ROCKETING
00:05 PDT 23 JUL 1999
Moe wrote in again to let us know about developments on the UFie BBS (see news item for 22 JUL 1999): Well...for a grand opening we had over 700 new users sign up! We will be fixing many of the problems we saw today so please come back! Sigh...brings a tear to my eye thinking back to the days when I ran my own single-line BBS. Makes me feel old and young at the same time. :)

IT'S BALLOT TIME
00:01 PDT 23 JUL 1999
Chris kindly wrote in to let us know that there is a poll up on LinuxDev.Net for "Linux Developer's favourite comic strip," and User Friendly is one of the options. I'm pleased to see that we're already in second place and extremely close behind Calvin & Hobbes (Watterson is one of my cartoon gods)! Head on over and vote!

YEAH, BUT CAN I RUN LINUX ON IT?
00:07 PDT 22 JUL 1999
This in from Daniel Farnan: Here comes a truly awesome piece of Geek Chic - check out the new Apple iBook I will be slaving away to put some bucks aside for this baby! It's due out in late September according to the news I've seen. Australians will, as always, have to wait a little longer... Hey, I want one too. Hmmm. Maybe a few more auctions...

UFIE BBS NOW ONLINE!
00:02 PDT 22 JUL 1999
Yes that's correct! A UFie Bulletin Board system -- harkening back to the days when I was proud to run a single-line BBS -- has been established for the community. From Moe, the generous chap who set the whole thing up and paid for the license: You can reach it at http://bbs.ufies.org and telnet://bbs.ufies.org. This BBS is in the spirit of retro computers and the way life used to be. We have brought back Door Games like Lord and TradeWars and will be starting a TradeWars Tournament for cool Ufie prizes. There are old fashioned Message Groups for exchanging ideas, and starting great distro wars. Soon to be added will be FidoNet feeds and other mail exchanges. The file area will also be open via ZModem and ftp so you can now post your favorite files for all the other Ufies out there. So please find your favorite ansi Telnet (Linux works well) or download one from the ftp server and join today. I am SO stoked. I was a TradeWars addict, so y'all better watch out when I come stompin' in your direction with my fleet. :)

UFIE SLAVERY RING
00:09 PDT 21 JUL 1999
Thyla wrote in with this item up for auction at eBay. It appears that UFie Ritalin-Boy has put his boss and UFie chum sad|st up for auction. Looks like he's getting some decent coinage on him too. :) I'm not selling any more original art -- I'll just lure some unsuspecting UFie every couple of weeks or so and live like a king.

OTHER WAY AROUND
00:05 PDT 21 JUL 1999
This in from Lisa Michaud: Hey, Illiad. I just thought I'd mention that [yesterday's] UF News entry mentioning me is slightly incorrect. The Girl's Guide to Geek Guys is the original, and mine is the reply. Mikki and Victoria wrote their essay six years ago according to the email Victoria just sent me, and I wrote mine in '95 after reading theirs. If you haven't before, check out the Guide to Geek Girls.

THREE DEE D.P.

James F. Jarrett has, with POVRAY and pure code, produced a most remarkable piece of work (check the bottom of the page), especially when you consider that he didn't use any WYSIWYG 3D modelling tools! Nicely done, James. I have a couple of things I'd like to see done with POVRAY -- I'll write you directly in a day or so.

WARP EIGHT, DUDE
00:09 PDT 20 JUL 1999
This is certainly an interesting way to do your computing. I'm not sure if I'd feel like Captain Kirk or Flash Gordon. Well. Not that either one is better than the other...nonetheless, I think I want one. :-) Thanks Spigot.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE KEYBOARD
00:03 PDT 20 JUL 1999
The Girl's Guide to Geek Guys is a reply to Lisa Michaud's Guide to Geek Girls. Getting hitched to the right person is often near and dear to the heart of the geek, and this just gives you another interesting take. A good read. Thanks to Shodan for the pointer.

AUCTION RESULTS
00:01 PDT 20 JUL 1999
The two illustrations finally went for US$700.00 ("Something out of Nothing") and US$530.00 ("Home Sweet Home"), which far exceeded what I thought it would be! Thank you to everyone who participated in the auction, and as promised 50% of the proceeds (approx. US$615.00) will be held in trust as a donation to the User Friendly Project for Humanity. Once we have enough money in the kitty to do some good, the coffers will be opened for UFPFH.

AUCTION ALMOST OVER
00:06 PDT 19 JUL 1999
The two illustrations will be off the auction block at (I believe) 1300 PDT, so if you want at the drawings, you'd better get cracking. ;-) Again for your ease of access, one is at Amazon.com and the other one is at eBay. Best of luck!

FUNNIER IN 'STRINE
00:01 PDT 19 JUL 1999
You learn something new every day. In from Craige McWhirter: We always get a laugh from your daily strip but today [Sunday's strip] we were in hysterics. Our US colleagues tell us the word 'root' means nothing unusual over there and being a sysadmin here in Australia you quickly get over the novelty of an account called 'root'. FYI: root is used interchangeably with [the 'f' word] over here "I got a f@$% last night" and "I got a root last night" mean the same thing. Seeing your Latin name for Sysadmin (Rootus Rootus - read as "root us! root us!" of course) was a classic. What more apt a name for Sysadmins? All of the Sysdmins I know, myself included, suit this name without taking into account the sizeable porn collection that sysadmins have ;) Ahem. Had I known...yeah, I still woulda done it. :-)
