SCRAPING YOUR WAY INTO A BLACK HOLE: As fascinating as astrophysics can be, I doubt very much many people want to be shoved into a black hole. In the Net world, being "blackholed" is Also Bad.

That clumsy segue brings me to my point: do not, I repeat, do not run wget scripts or other forms of scraping to suck down the cartoons out of the archives. Our hosting provider watches for signs of botnets and scraping and has been instructed by me to treat both with some measure of prejudice. Translation: if we suspect you're doing impolite things to our servers, we'll err on the side of caution and add your IP to the blackhole list. This may explain why you haven't been able to reach the site from your home computer but have had no problem doing so at work.

We also recognize that occasionally someone will be blackholed through no fault of their own. A botnet may have poisoned an IP range which includes you, or you may be leased an IP address that was previously blackholed for Doing Bad Things. Recently, we've had to block large chunks of IP addresses assigned to an ISP because their abuse department wasn't responding to our warnings regarding suspicious activity. We apologize if you're one of the innocent who've been blackholed.

Now, if you find you can't get to the site you need to go to the Contact Us page and send e-mail to the "Website Distress" address. In the e-mail please include your IP address and what you think may have caused the blackholing. If you were doing something Not Nice, a little contrition might help expedite re-enabling your IP.
