[Illiad] INVITED BY SUSE TO ATTEND CEBIT IN GERMANYDate:Sat Feb 19 19:03:56 2000
Thanks to the fine folks over at SuSE Linux, I'll be attending CeBIT, quite possibly the largest technology show in the entire world. The exhibition starts on Thursday, February 24th, and runs through to Wednesday, March 1. I'm not certain what days exactly I'll be at the show, but I'll be in Germany from the 23rd to the 28th. SuSE has me at their booth (the booth is monstrous and humbles any other booth I've ever seen in North American shows) for much of my stay; I understand that the weekend days are the busiest, so I'll definitely be there for that. If you can make it, please do come by and say hello! I'll be signing as usual, and I've been made to understand that SuSE will have some small CeBIT-exclusive giveaways.

If you're interested in talking to some of UF's biz folks, drop them a line and suggest a time to meet with them. As for me, I think I'll mostly be shackled to one of the booth poles during the show.

[Illiad] X-MEN MOVIE TRAILERDate:Sat Feb 19 18:56:30 2000
This has been out for a few days but I want to make sure that as many people know about it as possible. The X-Men Movie Trailer is finally out, and you get to see some pretty cool FX and shots. Halle Berry plays Storm, Patrick Stewart is Xavier, and I heard that Anna Paquin plays Rogue (my favourite character from the X-men comics).

The music in the trailer positively burns and the costumes are very reminiscent of The Matrix and Blade. Awesome stuff. I (perhaps foolishly) have high hopes for this flick. July 14th of this year is the opening day -- you'll see me in the line-up for the first tickets.

[Illiad] UNSUNG HEROES|HEROINESDate:Fri Feb 18 16:09:25 2000
You know, I don't do this anywehere often enough, and I've been supremely remiss in this lately, so I'll apologize to those concerned first and then try to make amends. Fact of the matter is, volunteers like Iambe with her grand column, Ciannait who toils over the Link of the Day, and Arcterex who runs and maintains ufies.org have over the past many months offered the community content, entertainment and some soul without fail. There are others of course, like Silvrstr who has offered up his pipe and boxen to drive several mailing lists for us and then some. I know there are others. I'm drawing a blank. Please don't demolish me just yet.

Anyway, my thanks (and belated apologies!) to everyone involved. This place would be nothing without the community.

[Illiad] CAREER OPPORTUNITY: MULTIMEDIA WIZARDDate:Fri Feb 18 01:35:24 2000
We're adding to the team again even as other job openings are being filled. We're looking for someone with substantial multimedia skills and a knack for project design. You're competent or better with Photoshop 5.5, Illustrator 8.0, Acrobat Distiller, InDesign or Pagemaker 6.5, Director 7, and you have a solid understanding of prepress and the production process. The Web is your lifeline. You totally grok interface design and theory. Although visual arts should be your focus, a strong understanding of audio arts and technology would be a serious plus. You must be located in Greater Vancouver and you must obviously be a UFie. It helps if you don't need sleep, and if you're a bit daft. Send resumes to me, with "I'm a bit daft" in the subject field. Because of the number of responses we tend to get, only candidates chosen for interviews will be contacted. Thanks in advance to all who respond!

UPDATE: DOUBLECLICK DETAILS STILL UNCLEARDate:Thu Feb 17 13:51:14 2000
Conflicting reports continue regarding the Doubleclick ad server and data collection practices. We have placed an "Opt Out" button that will remain on the Static page below the ad banner, until this issue resolved to our satisfaction. Following this link will take you to the Doubleclick server where you can complete the opting out process.

In the meantime, we are seeking a replacement ad-serving product. Until we manage to implement this we ask you to be patient with us. It's an onerous task that will take some time to complete. If you have a suggestion for an alternative ad server, please send it to Martina

[Illiad] DUST PUPPY ON THE COVER OF LINUX MAGAZINEDate:Wed Feb 16 23:55:19 2000
I just got the first report in of the March 2000 issue of Linux Magazine hitting the stands. Your eyes do not deceive you, that is indeed the l'il guy's grinning visage peering out at you on the cover. Within the issue, among some very fine content, is a six-page feature article on the history and background of User Friendly.

My thanks to the staff at LM for being such a pleasure to work with -- Adam, Bob, Lara and Rebecca. Ye gods I love deadlines, yes I do...

Yup, you heard right. We're in the market for someone who can do a million things at once in an administrative capacity, has an evil-eye for detail, and who loves the ebb and flow of office sludge. When you're given a task by someone in Marketing, Operations or Creative, you can run with the ball all by your lonesome until the play is complete. Computer knowledge is required, but you don't have to be a pro at anything in particular. Experience as an office manager would be cool. This position might be part-time at first, depending on a bunch of factors. Note: You will be required to be in the Vancouver area, working in our offices. There'll be room for advancement of course. This person will report to the Director of Operations, a really nice fella who plays a mean electric bass.

Interested? Send your resume to beaner@userfriendly.org with the subject 'Admin Wiz'.
