TEAM UFIE SETI@HOME DOUBLES IN SIZE
00:01 PST 23 MAY 1999
This in from Latheos, the leader for the Team UFie SETI@Home Project: Well, the team continues to grow by leaps and bounds. As of tonight, we're up to sixty-two members! Woohoo!

SETI@Home has made some changes to the site, with the welcome addition of team support. What this means to you is that you can now log in as yourself and choose to "Join" Team User Friendly through the link below. Your stats will be added to the team tally, but you'll see your own individual numbers as well. Of course, you can always keep things as they are, too. There's no penalty either way. It's up to you how you decide to sign in as a team member.

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_show&id=369

Also, if any of you do not want your email address listed on the site, let me know and we'll remove it. Your name will still be there, unless you don't want that listed either.

The stats for the team are quite impressive all things considered. If you head over to the SETI@Home site you'll see the numbers. As Latheos said in his letter, UFies rock. :)

LINUX EXPO FLOOR REPORT
00:04 PST 22 MAY 1999
Shadow Dragon sent in the following from Linux Expo: All right...we made it! At http://www.shadoweb.net/expo we've got some good pictures of CmdrTaco holding my daughter, and roo making a fool out of himself in front of Alan Cox ;) Heh. UFies are a weird bunch. I can just imagine Rob thinking to himself: "I'll bet Illiad put them up to this."

TEAM UFIE SETI
00:02 PST 22 MAY 1999
steelsnake, among others, have informed me that Team UFie's start on the SETI@Home project is off to a great start! http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/users.html will take you to the top 100 page, and last I checked we were in 44th place. Not bad at all! If you want to join up with Team UFie on this, the details are available at http://www.ufies.org/~seti/.

1,024 BIT ENCRYPTION
00:11 PST 21 MAY 1999
John Griffiths forwarded this link to an item on news.com to me, detailing the debut of Hush Mail, the world's first free web-based 1024 bit encrypted mail service. Yes...I said ONE THOUSAND AND TWENTY FOUR BITS. I've already grabbed illiad@hushmail.com so you lot can go sod off. :) But back onto a more serious note -- this service has likely just sent several government intelligence services into a tizzy. The ramifications are clearly huge, but I have yet to suss them all out. I may never be able to.

DUST PUPPY XEYES
00:05 PST 21 MAY 1999
Ivo, the hacker who put together TuXeyes has just released version 0.0.2, which includes a Dust Puppy screen-buddy who's eyes follow your mouse pointer around. Details at http://zero.xs4all.nl/~ivo/tuXeyes/. Thanks Ivo!

IF IT'S A TOY I WANT IT CONTINUED
00:01 PST 21 MAY 1999
The suggestions are coming in fast and furious, and some of them are really cool. If you're late to this, check the Archived News, but basically I'm looking for suggestions of "geek toys" and products (ranging from food to high-end gizmos) that you'd like to see UFies get a deep discount on. I'll keep the mailbox open for this over the weekend, so please write me and tell me what it is that gives you techie-wood.

IF IT'S A TOY I WANT IT
00:04 PST 20 MAY 1999
I'm getting close to running another survey again (with accompanying prizes) but I'd like to tune the survey a little more to begin with. What I'm interested in is what kinds of geek toys are the ultimate cool in your books -- computer hardware, stereo gear, even food. The ultimate end: I may be able to strike a deal with some suppliers for deep discounts to UFies. Write me and tell me what interests you.

THAT IS ONE BIG DROID
00:03 PST 20 MAY 1999
What with the hype surrounding The Phantom Menace, the creative and energetic folks at MIT devoted themselves to building this tribute to the second trilogy. Man, I wish I had a house shaped like that...

LINUX.COM TAKES OFF
00:01 PST 20 MAY 1999
Linux.com opened for business on Tuesday evening, just before I went to line up for the Phantom Menace. Good timing guys. :) Anyway, the site is dedicated to helping Linux newbies and convincing businesses that Linux is the OS for them. I also write a weekly column there, so in case you don't have enough to read in this sea of information known as the 'net, I invite you drop by the site and give it a browse. Accounts there are free, and the information is quite useful. Although the domain and site are funded and run by VAresearch, Linux.com is vendor-neutral, and has no commercial advertising. Congratulations to Trae McCombs and the Linux.com team for a great launch of a really spiff site!

DELAYED NEWS AND UPDATE
04:04 PST 19 MAY 1999
Yes, the update was delayed for you-know-what. I have more news to post but I am one bagged cartoonist, so further news updates will have to wait until I get a few hours of sleep. Thanks for bearing with me folks!

TEAM UFIES RC5 REPORT
04:03 PST 19 MAY 1999
More in from Dave Easterly: The Team is up to #80 overall...over 500 members strong, and rapidly approaching our 8,000,000th key block. :) Awesome. Is there no stopping this rocket?

BRIEF REVIEW: THE PHANTOM MENACE
04:00 PST 19 MAY 1999
Not to worry, no spoilers: Need more Darth Maul, and far less Jar-Jar. The writing wasn't up to Liam Neeson's ability as an actor. Ewen McGregor did a great job as a young Obi-wan. The effects were cool, the fight scenes intense. The first half hour was slow and disjointed. The plot needed tightening. Natalie Portman shows solid potential as an actress. It was worth watching, but not worth lining up for weeks or days for.

IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME
00:03 PST 18 MAY 1999
As if you didn't already know, The Phantom Menace starts running in less than 24 hours, and I'll be there to watch one of the midnight shows. If you send me mail, please don't expect to hear from me on the 19th unless it's extremely urgent -- between becoming a Jedi and the two meetings I have later in the day, I'll be away from my mailbox for most of Wednesday.

FTC NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU
00:01 PST 18 MAY 1999
I'm sure a lot of you have heard about the Mindcraft study (comparing Linux to NT) done a little while ago and the FUD that permeated it. Apparently the FTC can't do anything about the study being held up as a fair test because they aren't getting enough complaints. The full story is on LinuxToday and the FTC is located at http://www.ftc.gov. Thanks to Bob Campbell for pointing me at this issue.

A HEARD PLEA
00:08 PST 17 MAY 1999
Simon wrote in with the worldwide release schedule for The Phantom Menace and the following plea: As you can see many of your fans are going to be left gagging for the revelation that is the new Star wars movie for a couple of months. Even the United Kingdom where much of it was filmed will not be able to see it until the 16th July.

All I ask of you is that you refrain from giving away too much in your news column and include spoiler warnings so as not to spoil it for your international fanbase. Maybe even just including a link to a seperate page which non interested parties can avoid until seeing the film.

Consider it done. I'm even making sure that I don't do a Phantom Menace story arc, especially one that gives away surprises in the movie. After all, it's only polite.

TIME TO WIN A PALM PILOT III
00:06 PST 17 MAY 1999
Rod over at CDI Corporate Education wanted all of the UFies to know that there's a contest on his company's site, and the prize is a Palm Pilot III. It's something I've been meaning to get for myself, so I'll hold off until I see if I win this one. ;) NOTE: This one's for Canadians only.

CREATIVE GUN FOR HIRE
00:03 PST 17 MAY 1999
Believe it or not, I've actually freed up about 30 or so hours a month, so I'm looking for contracts to fill that billable hole. If your company or someone you know is looking for a creative director with years of experience and a quirky sense of humour, please write me!
